Large and Small Catamaran Results

Catamaran Results 2020-2021 Round 12  12-12-2020 (PS12 cc-)

Sailors were greeted to a cool cloudy 22 degree day with a shift breeze starting S, SE, ESE, SE, SSE and S (as per holfuy). A light breeze around 5 knots with up to 12 knot gusts. Duty team of Ralf Steyer and Rod Nairn. Billy Ledger recording finishes.  This week had 4 catamarans participating with the maricats of Wayne Barry on Prima Facie and Tony Zahra on White Wave. This left us with  windrush catamarans of Hugh Lewis on Hot Pepper and  Dave Glover sailing his new 14 squared Soggy Moggy. The lads using GPS to set leg lengths and angles worked out well however the shifty wind had its challenges. A standard  olympic course was set with an additional rounding mark at the top mark and a separate start line 100m or so below the bottom mark. Attached are the  Catamaran point score 12 care of Wayne Barry. BOM weather on the day at Albion Park airport. Overall finish sheet.  Catamarans finish sheet.
This week was the combined IYC and PKSC sailing day with some 38 boats participating . Numbers were boosted in particular in TY division with around 14 boats. Starting division were TY's, Monos, Catamarans and skiffs. Skiffs and some of the monos doing windward return. It was great to see a good turnout with plenty of craft mixing and dicing out on the lake. The light to moderate shifty breeze testing the skills of the sailors rewarding those who made the right choices.

Catamaran Results 2020-2021 Round 9  21-11-2020 (PS9 cc4)

Sailors were greeted to a cloudy 22 degree day with an ESE breeze around 7 knots with up to 14 knot gusts. Duty team of Sam Cronin  and Kevin Whitebread. Billy Ledger recording finishes.  This week had 3 maricat catamarans participating with Wayne Barry on Prima Facie, Jeff Reid Havoc and Swan Lake visitor Ian. This left us with 2 windrush catamarans of Hugh Lewis on Hot Pepper, Ralf Steyer on Dark Horse and  Dave Glover sailing his new 14 squared Soggy Moggy. After dismantling his catamaran at Swan Lake and driving all the way to PKSC Ian didn't make it to the start line with a stay mount failure allowing his mast to fall. The light conditions made for slow going at times. Attached are the Catamaran club Championship 4 status and Catamaran point score 9 care of Wayne Barry

Catamaran Results 2020-2021 Round 8  14-11-2020 (PS8 cc-)

This week after 3 weeks of not sailing we finally were able to get on the water. Sailors were greeted to a sunny 24 degree day with an easterly breeze 7 knots with up to 17 knot gusts. Duty team of Tony and Chris Zahra. Billy Ledger recording finishes.  This week had a little less catamarans participating with Wayne Barry competing in Maricat states at Mannering park and Tony Sanderson sailing his TY. This left us with Hugh Lewis on Hot Pepper, Jeff Reid on Havoc, Ralf Steyer on Dark Horse, Dave Glover finally getting to sail his new 14 squared Soggy Moggy and Glenn Morrel on his foiling sail board rounded off the catamaran division. However Les Porter , Bob junior also came down for a sail on their foiling A class catamarans as did Chris Malcolm on his F18.  (The large cats not racing). Tony and Chris setting a fairly long course as requested (approximately 1.5km catamaran legs). Bottom mark out behind gooseberry Island in middle of the Lake top mark over near shallows and wing mark down towards the reef. Once the race started Havoc and Dark Horse in particular neck and neck swapping the lead on a number of occasions. Hot Pepper training slightly just out of reach not able to make up the gap in the lighter conditions. Dark Horse only able to make a bit of a break on the last leg towards the X mark. The final leg also allowing Hot Pepper to make up some ground on Havoc. With the shifty breeze on last leg to the line making for some interesting works.
Attached are the Catamaran club Championship status and Catamaran point score 8 care of Wayne Barry.

Catamaran Results 2020-2021 Round 7  07-11-2020 (round 7 cancelled due to strong winds)

This week a reasonable turnout even with a stiff SE breeze predicted. Cloudy a mild 17 degrees. Learn to sail attracting around 16 youngsters and parents in the morning. Around 3 TY's , wasp, 5 catamarans and 3 sharpies coming down for a sail. At briefing advised the sailors that whilst wind was up towards top end of our sailing limit of consistent 25 knots we could still sail. The masses voting not to go out. The onshore white cap waves looking pretty un-inviting. The sharpie boys waiting a little longer before also deciding not to go out. See below for wind strength as per Holfuy on the day. Catamaran Results 2020-2021 Round 6  31-10-2020 (round 6 cancelled due to thunder storm activity)

This week a very wet morning greeted a good learn to sail turnout. Absolutely bucketing rain pounding down in morning making for indoor learn to sail. Also flooding over the lawn and washing away the beach. Average wind speed not too bad although some squalls blowing thru making it pretty unpleasant at times. By the time we got to briefing in the afternoon there were still storm cells hanging around even though the rain had cleared a little it was decided to cancel with the potential storm and lightning activity. A few rumbles in distance finalizing the decision.

A  level of uncertainty hovered regards what the weather would throw at us didn't stop a good turnout with 3 mono's,11 catamarans and 4 TY's coming down for a sail. Great to see Wayne Barry enticing a couple of extra maricat visitors for the drive up from Swan Lake to participate Ian Fraser and Ron Sword. Dave Glover wondering if he did the right thing leaving the maricat for a Nacra 14 square when there were 5 or 6 maricats planning to sail. Tony Zahra back for 1st race of season. Dave Glover rigged up the Nacra, Les Porter on Foiling A Class, Bob {Porter Junior and Johnny on 5.8m Nacra, Alex and Iryna Kucherenko and Jeff Reid and Hugh Lewis rounding out the catamaran field. We were actually down a couple of cats this week in Tony Sanderson self isolating with a cold and Jack Kroek. A northerly breeze of around 15 knots predicted as well as rain and around 25 degrees. There was plenty of anticipation and debate regards the possible weather conditions unfolding as the day progressed. Reviewing the radar just before briefing Lake Illawarra was surrounded by storm cells moving in from NW direction. So it was decided firstly to wait till 1:30pm to see what occurred then the start was deferred 1/2 and hour.  Duty team Hayden Sellers and Arron Weare went out onto Lake Illawarra and advised wind speed of around 15 knots. A couple of lightning claps and concerns that storm cells kept forming over the mountains and heading towards us. After consulting with available lightning, weather radar technology and consulting with a few of the experienced senior members it was decided to cancel sailing due to safety concerns associated with unpredictable storm conditions and lightning.

Big thanks to Wayne Barry who has taken over scoring and a little help from Barry Grant.

Setting a true course would have been a challenge as can be seen below. Also the Holfuy whilst shows the 27 knot gust doesn't show the lulls where by the Lake looked pretty glassy.

Catamaran Results 2019-2020 Round 21 14-03-2020

A very cool 12 degree day with a 10 to 15 knots breeze and rain etc only saw one sailor turn up today (Dave Glover with his maricat catamaran shabby Tabby). Early on in morning their was some strong winds around 20 knots with up to 30 knot gusts, which I suspect combined with near Gale force wind forecast for the day put off some others who may have come down.
Early on a group of paddle boarders  from around Windang and utilized the 20 knot southerly breeze at this time and combined with a few waves to make their way over to Port Kembla Sailing Club utilizing our rigging area to exit the lake. They must be hardy soles most wearing board shorts and short sleeved rash vest or T shirt.

Hugh Lewis, Alex and Iryna coming down to do duty. Bill Ledger, Ross Fyfe (with trusty dog) and Wayne Barry coming down to assist as  finishers. Sylvia Ledger sorting out kitchen activities and feeding those hardy souls coming down to the club house today.

I took the opportunity to go thru duty crew responsibilities with Alex and Iryna.

Early on there was a stiff breeze however as the morning progressed the wind strength steadily dropped. Around 11:30am Ralf Steyer rang to see how many keen sailors had turned up for a sail. Saying if another sailor or two showed up he would come down. (unfortunately this didn't eventuate).

We passed time eating a  burger and having a good chat  waiting to see if any other hardy sailors would come down.

With no further sailors coming down and after discussion with those present It was decided to call off sailing this week due to lack of participants. Even though the wind strength was a quit reasonable 10 to 15 knots.

Catamaran Results 2019-2020 Round 20 07-03-2020

A cool cloudy day around 23 degree day with a 10 to 15 knots breeze with up to 20 knot gusts S. This week we had four (4) catamarans come down for a sail. Tony Zahra, Jody Matthews, Dave Glover and Hugh Lewis. This week Richard Hipsley and Paul Leaudais doing duty. The course start out in front of the club before Gooseberry Island, top mark towards the middle of the Lake and wing mark towards the IYC. Hot Pepper and Shabby Tabby making it to the start line. The catamarans starting without incident starboard tack towards the reef good wind strength allowing use of  trapeze. The wind swung towards the SE meaning we overshot the lay line a little. Duty crew made an adjustment to top mark location after 1st lap to give a better angle. Hot Pepper having an incident free race. Shabby Tabby also out on the wire had a little excitement when attempting to come in off the wire near some fishermen slipping and then doing a not so graceful dismount. Culminating in a capsize. The crew on the fishing boat giving rousing cheers and a high rating for artistic capsize skills in near proximity of their boat. Salvaging some dented pride and sporting a choc top Shabby Tabby completed the race. Requiring some gumption cleaning product to clean the lake mud discoloration from the sail.

Catamaran Results 2019-2020 Round 19 29-02-2020

A warm 24 degree day with a 10 to 15 knots breeze with up to 25 knot gusts ENE. This week we had seven (7) catamarans come down for a sail. Les Porter going out early to polish up on his foiling A class skills for an upcoming regatta. And Glenn Morrel joining us on his foiling windsurfer. Todd and Riley Curry setting a great catamaran course. The course start out in the middle of the lake above Gooseberry Island, top mark near the IYC entrance and wind mark just inside Gooseberry Island. Once out on the water the breeze picked up a little to a fairly consistent 15 knots making for some exhilarating sailing. The catamaran start was hotly contested with the likes of Tony Zahra, Wayne Barry and Ralf Steyer hitting the line well pretty much on the start hooter.  A start board work towards Gooseberry Island saw the top 3 boats pointing high enough to get across the east corner of Gooseberry. Hot Pepper going a bit deeper out on the wire had to tack earlier to avoid the island as did Freja and Shabby Tabby. The stronger wind suiting Hot Pepper able to power up and reveled in the conditions leading the way to the top mark and led the rest of the race. With a little bit of luck on the 1st work and weight with levered advantage allowing Hot Pepper to maintain the lead. Even surviving a submarine episode on a screaming reach from the top mark towards the wind mark when a strong gust came thru. Sitting behind the back beam just able to prevent lurching forward and hence able to pull back on the trapeze wire to pull the nose of the hull back above water again. Prima Facie, White Wave and Dark Horse in hot pursuit the full race ready to pounce if hot pepper made a mistake. Hot Pepper going for speed on the works able to maximize power out on the wire able to out distance the higher pointing chasers. Then holding them at bay on the reaches.

The launch area was a little steep this week due to the rain run off and onshore breeze waves having cut away at the shoreline. The ever thoughtful Tony Zahra doing a little shovel work to make a makeshift ramp.

Catamaran Results 2019-2020 Round 18 22-02-2020

A warm cloudy 21 degree day with a light Wind estimated around 5 to 15 knots SSE swinging around to NE by the end of the race making it pretty tough for duty team to set a true course. This week we had eight (8) participating in catamaran division even with 2 out to do duty (Jody and Jack). The course start east of Gooseberry Island, top mark out in middle of lake and wing mark above the reef. This week course layout was assisted thru the use of GPS to get accurate leg lengths and angles. A quick run thru and practice using a GPS onshore giving the duty crew confidence in using "Way Points". The catamaran start was hotly contested and a pretty tight affair with Hot Pepper getting into the mix with the more experienced White Wave and Dark Horse, The cats getting away without any further fuss and heading on starboard tack. Hot Pepper following White Wave over shooting the lay line. The rest of the fleet tacking earlier and making good ground. As the race progressed the breeze swung around from a southerly to a north easterly direction and on the final leg the catamarans had a shy reach directly from the bottom to top mark and the a screaming work back to the X mark, the wind picking up to around the 10-15 knot mark for these 2 legs. Tony Zahra leading the way home, followed by Ralf Steyer, Wayne Barry Hugh Lewis and Dave Glover. Alex and Aryna Kucherenko and Greg Morrell (not given finish times) and Les Porter getting out on the water earlier doing his own thing. The launch area was a little steep this week due to the rain run off and onshore breeze waves having cut away at the shoreline.

Catamaran Results 2019-2020 Round 17 15-02-2020

A warm 26 degree day with a light Wind around 5 to 9 knots SE. This week numbers were down due to the Moth states and people not sailing to assist with running this regatta (Wayne Barry). I defected with Tony Sanderson to give him a hand sailing his TY "Ruby" This left us with 4 catamarans sailing this week. Jody Mathews on "Freyja", Ralf Steyer on "Dark Horse", Alex and Arinya on "Sunny Bunny" and  Dave Glover on "Shabby Tabby". Dave going particularly well in the light conditions challenging Ralf all the way till the last leg. The round the lake race started using the Moth Sates start line and start boat. With a mass start (single start). The start was out south of Gooseberry Island. 1st starboard round mark up towards Windang then a good reach for the Ty's over to Koonawarra. Due to the lighter wind conditions the duty crew shortened up the Oak Flats mark and placed in approx 200 - 300m south of Koonawarra mark. Once port rounding around Koonawarra mark and Oak flats mark. The back to Windang then X and finish. The winds being a little light for the foiling moths hence we had the lake to ourselves. Whilst muddy the lake was pretty free of flotsam.

Catamaran Results 2019-2020 Round 16 01-02-2020

A very warm 35 degree and humid day made for a very sweaty day on the rigging field. A couple of people not sailing due to the heat. Wind around 10 to 15 knots E to NE. This week numbers were down due to the trailer sailor regatta at Sussex. Even still six (6) catamarans and a Weta still making their way out on the water.

Catamaran Results 2019-2020 Round 5 19-10-2019

Quite a summery day peaking around 29 degrees with a 15 to 20 knot westerly breeze predicted (I was advised gusts on meteye forecast up to 40 knots). With the strong gusty westerly winds predicted to strengthen during the afternoon deterred a number of catamaran sailors. Those who did bring their craft down hoping to get out on the water were myself, Alex & Aryna Kucherenko, Wayne Barry and Johnny & Bob Porter bring down their brand new Nacra 5.8. This week Tony Sanderson and Paul Leaudais bringing down Tony's TY "Ruby". Paul English and Dave Glover launching the Wal Curry as it was their turn for duty. Bill Ledger and Ross Fyfe and Norm and Chris Malcolm rounding out the catamaran supporters. The juniors getting out on the water in the morning. The breeze picked up towards the end of their session a 30  to 40 knot gust coming thru. Looking out over Lake Illawarra the water scape varied. One minute looking ok until a gust whipped up a very different view with plentiful white caps. After a burger and  discussion and review of the current Holfuy conditions and predictions of increasing wind strength it was decided to call off the days racing. To the disappointment of some and the relief of others. Below a couple of photos and a snapshot of Holfuy.

Those who arrived early found the plovers very protective of 2 tiny plover chicks running around the rigging area dodging cars and boats. The parent plovers flying around diving past anyone who strayed too close to their young. At 11am the AGM was held and various positions elected. Around luch time Glen Morrell (foiling windsurfer) came to see me interested in joining our club. And he advised a couple of his colleagues are also interested in sailing at our club. Glen and one of his fellow wind surfers going out early when the wind was blowing a bit stronger and a few whitecaps across the lake.
This week the two F18's of Chris and Bob Porter doing a windward return course (4 times around the top mark). And the balance of the small cats doing the standard course. This week weta(s) joined the monohulls and Paul English on Nacra 16sq joined the small cats. Tony Zahra on White wave deciding not to go. Those racing were rewarded with variable but moderate conditions.
