I would like to welcome all past and new juniors to the new sailing season 2010/2011. This year’s junior sailing program will commence on Saturday October 9th, 2010.
All the club boats will be ready for sailing this year, after a successful Junior Working Bee in early August. I would like to thank all those helpers once again.
I am thrilled to be involved in the club as the Junior Sailing Head Coach. After a successful year last year, I am hoping to have the same team of coaches together as last season. Junior coaches Bobby Porter, Todd Curry and Hayden Sellers were a great assistance to myself and the junior sailors last year. I would like to thank these guys in advance for offering to help, together we will have a great team again.
I would also like to take the opportunity to invite all parents to become involved with helping the junior sailing program as they did last year. This includes helping the juniors during their training - both on shore and off, along with looking after the club equipment, which is provided for the Juniors use each Saturday morning.
The focus this year is to get the current junior sailors moving through to club racing and eventually on to regattas and Senior afternoon racing, as well as teaching the new comers and the early level sailors the basics of sailing through their log books. It should be a great year of racing as lots of the families are starting to buy their own boats. This means the kids will be sailing their own boat every week, they won’t need to get accustomed to a different boat each week and not miss out, as currently the club does not have enough boats to put all the Juniors on the water at once. This also frees up the club boats for new members to try sailing.
PKSC is a great family based club and as Junior Head Coach, I would also like to encourage the parents of the juniors to become involved in the club, whether it be getting a ride on a boat in the afternoon, helping out with the seniors racing by assisting with the duty crew, helping in the canteen or just offering to help around the club – there is always plenty of general maintenance on the building, grounds and also on the junior boats.
I am looking forward to this season ahead and welcome all the help I can get, as this will allow myself and the other coaches to start focusing on building the Junior program within PKSC.
