Nothing to report on club sailing this week as apparently there was no race !! However, our Sharpies went to Balmoral for the second weekend of state titles.

The weather was the same as we seem to get every year at Balmoral - raining with southerly breeze. On the Saturday we had an afternoon race on their normal club courses in a nice 15 knot SE and then on Sunday we had back to back races out in the main area between the heads - the first being in 15 or so knots and the second with gusts well over 20 !

Best performed PKSC boat overall for the weekend was Mr Freeze with a 2nd, 3rd and 4th closely followed by Mainiac with a 4th, 5th and 1st. Road Kill seems to have fixed their upwind speed but had a couple of swims downwind to come in 8th, 12th and 8th. John Richardson was sailing on Shazam from Canberra and had a 5th, 16th and DNF while Tim Butler off Southern Cross sailed as foreward hand for Derek on Sunday.

On Mainiac we had a weekend of challenges - Dylan broke his hand on the first work on Saturday but refused to retire - sailing the rest of the race with one hand then off to hospital for his plaster - we breed them tough at PKSC !! Its hard enough doing a Sharpie spinaker with two hands so I don't know how he did it. On Sunday we got Locky Prior (local MG sailor) to sail with us - had issues with the jib sheets in the first race then in the last race he fell against the side of the boat and broke off the moulding that has the jib cleat on it - having to sail the rest of the race holding the jib upwind ! He then ended up at the doctors with cuts on his leg !! I must be a tough skipper.

All in all it was a fun weekend - particularly Sunday as the breeze was consistent and there were not many other boats on the water.

The last heats of our states are at Batemans Bay in April - both Mr Freeze and Mainiac still have a chance of winning the titles although Smoke is definitely in the best position to do so.

Not much to report over the last week except for the Youth Regatta held at the club. Many of the monohull sailors helped out and our junior sailors participated. A great time was had by all - although the rescue boats were kept busy with the huge fleet of Laser sailors who were not used to sticking their masts in the mud !! As usual the club ran the event well. Results are available on the events section of the forum.

It will be great to get back to club racing this weekend. Since Christmas the season has been a bit disrupted with various regattas, etc. Hopefully we will get a really good turnout from this weekend for the rest of the season. See you all on the water.

27-02-2011, 07:09 PM (This post was last modified: 27-02-2011, 07:11 PM {2} by IanR.)
After many of us being away from club racing since Christmas (regattas, holidays, etc) Saturday turned on spectacular weather for sailing with a solid north easterly breeze and bright sunshine. All Sharpies were in attendance except Mr Freeze who were on rescue duty as well as the MGs and Flying Ant.

Pleasure & Pain has a new forward hand - and Mark also grabbed Hayden for the day. Mainiac's normal crew were also away so Kurt and Jackson were on board for the day.

From the start, Pleasure & Pain led from Road Kill and Mainiac. Southern Cross had a port-starboard incident with Skulker and put a hole in their bow so could not continue. Luckily Skulker had no damage. Skulker was leading the MGs from Intensity and Willful Intent - with Missguided Missile not far behind.

As the Sharpies neared the top mark the carnage continued - Road Kill went so close behind P&P that Frank hit the boom on P&P. Mainiac tacked to lay the top mark and had a ratchet block on the jib literally explode while P&P had a swim. Road Kill also swam while doing their penalty turn.

Skulker was leading the MGs comfortably while Intensity was having difficulty holding off Willful Intent who were having their best race yet.

Yet another Sharpie retirement happened when Mark on P&P had a massive leg cramp with a lap to go leaving Road Kill to finish first on line honours - despite a swim 10 metres from the finish line. Skulker comfortably led the MGs home after some spectacular spinnaker rides while Willful Intent ended up overtaking Intensity.

Willful Intent won by 10 minutes on PBH - I think the handicapper will have to start keeping an eye on Kian and Amelia. Road Kill ended up second with Missguided Missile third.

A pity about all the retirements - but a great day was had by all.

When I arrived at the club a stiff south easterly was blowing - the first thing I saw was a couple of the Manly Juniors out there having a great time - its great to see how much they have progressed during the season !

A reduced fleet of monos hit the water for the afternoon race - hopefully most will be back on the water this weekend. Hayden hurt his back helping the juniors so Kevin stood in as sheet hand on Mr Freeze while Kian sailed as forward hand on Mainiac. It was great to see John and Scott in their NS sailing the afternoon race for the first time.

From the start, Mr Freeze reveled in the breeze and pulled out a lead by the top mark followed by Mainiac, Intensity, Missguided Missile and Hot Spots. Mainiac managed to catch up a bit on the reach and then the wind started to drop. By the end of the windward-return Mainiac had pulled out a lead which they held to the finish in lightening conditions.

Mainiac won the race on PBH from Mr Freeze and Missguided Missile.

Thanks must go to Sam and Mark who did duty - it was a long day on the water as the last TY and small cat didn't finish till about 5pm.

The forecast was for showers but we ended up with a hot sunny day - and a moderate NE breeze. Once again a number of boats were away at regattas so we had a reduced fleet.

From the start, Mainiac and Blowflies had a great battle for the lead with Mainiac holding a slight lead at the first mark. Road Kill and Skulker were not far behind. Kian and Amelia were sailing well - but guys being 1 minute late for the start is not the way to sail - how about aiming a bit higher in future - you are sailing so well otherwise !

At the end of the first lap Blowflies sheared a 1/4" bolt that holds the sidestay on and were lucky not to break their mast.

Final results saw Wilful Intent win on PBH from Mainiac and Skulker. Kian and Amelia have improve so quickly the handicapper is having problems keeping up.

It was great to see Poseidon sailing in the afternoon race with Jess skippering and dad Peter crewing. They did very well and should improve quickly having the other monohulls around them giving advice ! Hopefully in future Poseidon and Hot Spots will sail the afternoon races regularly.

As we come closer to the end of the season, the overall pointscore and pointscore B are very close. Unfortunately I think both will be decided on who is away from the club least - but hey thats what pointscores are all about - consistency. The progress results are, as usual, up on the website. These may change a bit as we have to adjust the entry list at the end of the season to only include boats that qualify for the minimum number of races.

Good luck to Sam and Kevin on Blowflies - they are heading up to Hamilton Island this week to participate in the 505 world championships.

Next Saturday is the junior camp - and we have a round the lake race in the afternoon. It would be great to see lots of monohulls coming down and taking a junior with them in the race - this is how we encourage our future sailors ! See you on the water.

A stiff but easing southerly greeted the fleet on Saturday. It was good to be able to have the bottom mark positioned just off the club so spectators got a good view of the racing.

From the start, the Sharpies split sides to try to get the best breeze. Mr Freeze went right, Please & Pain up the middle and Mainiac to the left. Road Kill missed the start by a bit as they had their timing wrong. Mr Freeze probably did their best pick of the season here and were a few hundred metres ahead at the first mark which they maintained to the finish. Pleasure & Pain showed good upwind speed to just beat Mainiac round the mark followed by Road Kill, Wilful Intent and Missguided Missile. Unfortunately P&P got their spinnaker rope under the boat and had to capsize to rectify. Road Kill had a swim at the gybe mark leaving the fleet a bit spread out. Wilful Intent were sailing a good race but a gear failure saw them swimming half way round the windward-return lap. Missguided Missile sailed well as usual - they are after all the current state champions !!

Road Kill eventually withdrew - Josh who was standing in as sheet hand got too cold - he didn't realise how warmly you need to dress in these conditions. On Mainiac we had Victoria standing in - she went very well and apart from saying "sorry" every time we tacked, made the comment at the end "now I know why my dad used to love sailing Sharpies" ! Jonathon sailed with P&P - Mark said at the end of the race he was the best sheethand they had ever had - wants to sign him up straight away. Shows how well the juniors sail on all sorts of boats.

Final results for the day had Mr Freeze first, Mainiac second and Missguided Missile third on PBH.

Well - the season has come to an end and it has been a good one overall for the PKSC monohull fleet.

Last Saturday we only had two boats on the water - Mr Freeze and Mainiac. A number of our boats were at the CHS regatta and given that its school holidays a few boats had already finished for the season. Highlight of the day was Laurie sailing as crew on Mainiac - he had a great time !

This season we introduced a method of running the pointscore with all boats competing being eligible no matter which course they sailed. This worked out extremely well with boats from both the short and long course figuring in the results regularly. As is always the case, the people who sailed most regularly figured in the overall results for the season.

Yardstick racing is always difficult to organise due to the varying speeds of the boats - I think we have a great compromise now. We actually had over 20 boats sailing at various stages of the season which is really good. I am looking forward to the time when we have enough junior boats on the water in the afternoon to make it worth running a junior class division. When we do end up having a flow through from the juniors it will be important to keep classes intact (eg MJ, F11, FA form the junior fleet and the intermediate/advanced classes MG, Sharpie, Open form the senior fleet). As individual classes grow (Sharpie, MG, etc) we will have to look at the potential for splitting them out for true one design racing - how many do we need to do that ? All good questions which the way the junior training is going will probably have to be answered in time for the season after next.

One disappointing note to the season was the dropoff in participation in the second half. It seemed that with holidays, regattas, etc that we may have tried to fit too much in. I would like to generate some discussion over winter on how we may be able to improve in this regard. As we have many juniors in our ranks we need to try to avoid scheduling club championships when people are likely to be away ! Also, is there any way we can get some of the better MJs out racing in the afternoon - maybe 1 lap ? Lets chat on the forum over winter.

From a results perspective, our monohulls travelled to many regattas whith good results in the MG, Flying Ant and Sharpie nationals and states. Highlight was Dante and Lachlan winning the Flying Ant state titles - well done guys.

Thanks to all participants for a great season - looking forward to next year the rumour mill is already working with likely new faces in the Sharpies and some of the juniors likely to add to the regular MG14s

See you all on the water next season !

I noticed Ian mention having juniors in the main fleet racing next season and would like to make a suggestion.
The numbers and ages of the junior Sat morning classes are growing rapidly with many of these teenage "juniors" not fitting on a
Skyrider and having to share the clubs Laser and Spiral. If we could get these kids into some sort of NS-MG program with guidance from the more experienced skippers the club could become a major player in this class. These are very capable young sailors who would confidently sail sat afternoons short course.
From these juniors perspective we need bigger training boats and plenty of them.It would also give the coaching staff and other club members the ability to train juniors who no longer fit into the clubs Manly Juniors although watching Brad and Hugh crawl around on skyriders is always a laugh.
I would like the club to think about purchasing some of these older bargain (under $500) NS/MG14s as they become available as both a training boat for these larger juniors and also to be used in afternoon races.I personally picked up another NS14 aero 6 over Xmas on ebay with a registered trailer for $500 and have seen plenty without trailers from as little as $150.
My suggestion is start a cheap fleet of early Aeros and introduce the juniors to short course racing .
Who knows what the response will be next year and if numbers continue to increase at the same rate we will have over 50 registered juniors for the upcoming 2011-2012 season .

I was just reading the minutes of the MG14 class - apparently John and Emmett on Skulker won the season touring trophy !! Well done boys - great work for a first season in the class.
