Monohull race report 9 Feb 2013

Its amazing what a difference a week makes. The sun was shining and wind from the north east. Quite a few boats turned up - even though the wind was just as strong as last week. Some boats decided not to go out but most did.

The race was a handicap start which made things interesting. Blur was off first - Pleasure & Pain was supposed to start at the same time but some rigging problems with their spinnaker delayed them by a few minutes. Blowflies was off next followed by P&P. Mainiac started a few minutes later with Mr Freeze close behind. Windandsea was next with Italian Stallions starting on scratch as they do the short course. Both Windandsea and Italian Stallions had gear problems and withdrew.

Blur was sailing really well until they had a swim at the gybe mark which allowed the rest of the fleet to catch up. Blowflies was sailing really fast downwind but the Sharpies were catching them upwind. Mainiac dropped their spinnaker under the boat on the first lap and lost a fair bit of time.

Coming round the bottom mark the last time most boats were very close together. Pleasure & Pain was clearly the fastest upwind - watch out Mr Freeze if they can go as fast downwind in those conditions !

Mr Freeze came through and finished first with a very close battle between Pleasure & Pain and Mainiac for second. John was determined not to let dad past - unfortunately a wind shift just before the finish allowed Mainiac to sneak though. Blowflies was close behind followed by Blur.

Handicap starts definitely make the finishes interesting as theoretically all boats should finish together.

The Sharpies will be at their state titles next weekend - good luck to all.

Monohull race report 2 Feb 2013

It was wet and windy on Saturday morning - only a few hardy souls ventured down to the club for sailing. The wind was varying between consistent 15 knots with squalls up to about 25 knots.

Five monohulls rigged, however the wind picked up a bit and Prawn Stars decided discretion was the order of the day and stayed on the beach.

At the start the wind was around 20 knots - Pleasure and Pain took off closely followed by Italian Stallions who were revelling in the breeze and Mainiac. Blur had an issue just at the start and was a little late across the line.

Nearing the top mark, Pleasure and Pain broke their nice shiny new mast - we are not quite sure why. Shortly after a very strong squall came through for a few minutes and Italian Stallions and Mainiac had a wild jib and main reach.

Italian Stallions decided to head in after the first lap and Blur was on the way in. Mainiac were the only one left on the course so decided to follow suit near the top mark the next time.

Its a pity noone finished as the conditions were quite sailable and great fun. Hopefully we get more pleasant weather next Saturday.
