Monohull race report 22nd February 2014

22/2/2014

Once again we had a light SE breeze - seems to be most common this season. The forecast was for much stronger but it turned out to be a nice day on the water.

Dean turned up with a different boat - and NS14 which he purchased somewhere in central NSW. Windansea also sailed for the first time this season - welcome back Neil and Simon.

The first work proved decisive in this race with Truck and Pleasure & Pain making the most of the variable conditions to lead round the first mark in close company. Mainiac was next followed by Space Monkeys, Windansea, NS14 and Prawn Star. Prawn Star pulled ahead of the NS14 downwind to end up leading home the short course sailors. Space Monkeys picked the second work well and bridged some of the gap to the front Sharpies. Windansea showed their usual downwind speed and lead line honours for the rest of the race. Mainiac picked the shifts badly on the second work and dropped back a bit but recovered some of the ground by late in the race. Truck finished first Sharpie followed by Pleasure & Pain, Space Monkeys and Mainiac.

Pointscore result was Prawn Stars first, Space Monkeys second and Mainiac third.

Monohull race report 8 February 2014

We have all been hoping for a good northeaster and we certainly got it on Saturday with gusts to around 25 knots. The action started just before the delayed start got under way when Space Monkeys lost their forestay - not too much damage luckily with the states on next week.

As seems usual in this type of breeze, Truck led from start to finish. Blur and The Ribwich had a good battle for second place during the first lap but were overtaken by the ever improving Pleasure & Pain team who ended up a clear second. Mainiac was initially just behind this battle but struggled a little with the new crew combination and had a couple of capsizes which put them back a bit. Blowflies recovered from an early capsize.. Prawn Stars sailed consistently and got round the course OK.

All together it was a good day on the water with Truck, Pleasure & Pain and The Ribwich taking the first three places.

Good luck to all the Sharpies at the states next weekend.

Monohull race report 1st February 2014

We had a pretty small fleet for sailing today with quite a few boats not in attendance due to TY regattas and other things.

Four Sharpie fronted the starter for PS15 in a light 8-10 knot easterly. A number of boats had standin crew with Mick missing from Blur, Red missing from Space Monkeys and Mainiacs new forward hand Glenn having to work.

From the start Space Monkeys really enjoyed the lighter breezes with Zoe acting as forward hand and pulled out a reasonable lead by the first mark with Blue, Pleasure & Pain and Mainiac all rounding together. The four boats were never separated by more than a few minutes.

By the end of the second lap, Space Monkeys was in front with Blur second , Pleasure & Pain third and Mainiac fourth. Pleasure & Pain went right in to the shore on the next work and got a great lift bringing them up to first place followed by Blur, Space Monkeys and Mainiac. Space Monkeys tried some interesting downwind tactics on the next two laps to try to recover but they didn't work. Positions stayed the same through to the finish although with all boats between X and the finish line anything could have happened as the wind was very flukey in near the club.

Well done to the Pleasure & Pain team - once they got in front they are sailing fast enough to stay there.

Blur was first on Pointscore.

A reminder - the delayed heat 4 of the Club Championship will be held this Saturday 8 February.
