Sharpie States Batemans Bay

23/4/2012

The final weekend of Sharpie State Titles was held last weekend in conjunction with the Batemans Bay regatta. 5 boats from our club participated including Blur who had their first race in the new boat. There were 17 Sharpies in attendance which must be some sort of record for a NSW event.

The weather was far from ideal - light down to drift conditions on Saturday and only a little better on Sunday. The swell was also big on Saturday with a number of people feeling the motion.

For the weekend, Smoke was the winner followed closely by Mainiac. The same was the result overall in the states. Smoke has now won I think 7 states in a row - although Mainiac pushed them all the way this year. The competition in the fleet is now really good with 4 different heat winners across the seven heats with both Mainiac and Mr Freeze winning a heat.

Results for our club Sharpies in the BBSC regatta were :
2nd Mainiac
8th Mr Freeze
9th Southern Cross
11th Blur
12th Pleasure & Pain

and in the 505 fleet
4th Sam Cronin
6th Dean Souter (who only finished one race due work commitments)

Both boats from our club who sailed in the CHS did really well. Pleasure & Pain ended up 4th overall and Skulker 6th - this is out of 110 boats !! In the high performance dinghy division, Pleasure & Pain were first and Skulker fourth. Well done Nick, Alex, Dylan, John and Lachlan.

Monohull race report 14 Apr 2012

A very small fleet of monos turned out for the last heat of the Club Championship - three Sharpies and one MG.

Most excitement was around the monohull long course championship with Mainiac and Mr Freeze on equal points.

A pleasant NE breeze came in just before the start - Mainiac, Mr Freeze and Southern Cross were all close together up the first work. Mr Freeze and Mainiac pulled out a small lead and proceeded to match race for most of the erst of the race - never more than a few boatlengths apart. The second last work decided the race with a small windshift giving Mr Freeze a jump which they held to the end despite Mainiacs best efforts. Of significant note was the fact that Southern Cross was only a minute behind - our Sharpie fleet is looking really competitive for next season.

Well done to Mr Freeze (Todd, Hayden and Brad) for winning the championship. Also, thanks to Kevin for standing in as my foreward hand for the race - it was good to have a sailor from another competitive Sharpie on board to get some advice !

Poseidon sailed really well and took out handicap honours easily. They are leading the overall club pointscore - however there are still three boats who can win that event in the last heat next weekend - Poseidon, Wilful Intent and Skulker.

The Sharpies will be heading off to Batemans Bay next weekend for the last state titles heats - Mainiac is currently running second and can still win that event. I believe all 5 boats will be going. In addition, our 505s will be travelling down for the regatta - they look like having a good fleet there as well.
