Monohull race report 22 Sep 2012

22/9/2012

Well, if all the boats that have sailed in the first three races all got on the water at the same time it would be great. Today, Windandsea made their first appearance and MrE made it out to the start which is fantastic ! From what I hear most boats will be on the water from the next race.

We had a dying SE to E breeze today which was very pleasant. Most of the time it was 5-10 knots with occasional stronger gusts. Opinion was divided as to which end of the start line to use as the wind was swinging. Those who ended up going left lost out a little on the first work. Mr Freeze got round first followed closely by Mainiac, Blowflies, Windandsea and Pleasure & Pain. For the rest of the race, Mr Freeze and Mainiac battled with Windandsea for line honours and Blowflies and Pleasure & Pain also had a good race. Mr E was making steady progress in their first race.

Final results had Windandsea taking line honours from Mr Freeze and Mainiac. The pointscore results were Please & Pain first, Mr Freeze second and Mainiac third. The handicaps worked out well with only 4 minutes between first and last !!

There is no sailing next Saturday so I am looking forward to seeing everyone on the water the following weekend.

Monohull race report 15 Sept 2012

We had a much nicer day for the second race of the season with a nice south-easterly blowing. However, there were still a number of boats yet to hit the water - hopefully we will get the full fleet out soon !!

Pleasure & Pain couldn't get their main up and were quite late for the start. MrE found fixed rudders difficult getting off the beach. Rod Nairn has swapped the Laser for his 470 - welcome to new crew Rhiannon who had her first race and enjoyed it.

Mainiac got off to a good start and was showing excellent upwind speed closely followed by Mr Freeze, Blowflies, Wilful Intent and Spindrift. Mr Freeze picked some good windshifts and led at the first mark. Wilful Intent was sailing well with their new sails until the spinnaker got badly tangled at the end of the first lap. Spindrift showed that a 3 year old boat still has some pace !!

Most crews commented that the day was one of the nicest SE breezes they have sailed for ages.

Final results for the CC1 long course were Mr Freeze first, Blowflies second and Mainiac third. On the short course Spindrift took first place.

Pointscore results were Blowflies first, Mr Freeze second and Mainiac third.

Rumour has it that some of the MJ sailors want to venture on to the afternoon course which is great news. We will sail them on a course one lap less than the current short course and they will be included in the overall pointscore results.

Monohull race report 8 Sept 2012

Not many boats turned up for the first day of sailing - maybe the forecast had something to do with it. As it turned out the winds were not too extreme and 5 hardy crews set out for the start line.

Italian Stallions decided to adjust their rig settings and the mast fell over - better luck next time guys ! Mainiac also had a stay problem before the start but managed to reattach in time to compete.

Blowflies got off to a good start with Mainiac just behind. Pleasure & Pain with John skippering a Sharpie for the first time had a practice capsize on the way to the start but managed to make it in time. They were going very fast upwind in the conditions. Hydro Hooligan was going well but rounded one of the windsurfer marks by mistake and eventually withdrew.

Mainiac led for the rest of the race with Blowflies not far behind. Pleasure & Pain had another swim and decided to head home after a promising start.

On handicap, Blowflies was first with Mainiac second.

I hope we have more boats on the water next week for the first Club Championship. This race showed that the forecast can be wrong - its whats blowing at the time that counts !

Thanks to the Southern Cross crew for doing rescue duty - it was a very good course.
