Monohull race report 27 September 2014

27/9/2014

The forecast for Saturday did not look promising with the Bureau initially saying variable at 10 knots - which they changed in the morning to SE to E which was much better. We ended up with a pleasant breeze of about 5-10 knots which was shifting a fair bit.

All six Sharpie were in attendance - a record for a club race - as well as Jacina skippering the 420, Glenn and Dylan in the B14 and welcome to Ben Herrald who sailed his Laser.

As seems usual this season the competition was very close - Truck, Blur, Pleasure & Pain and Italian Stallions went to the left of the course with the others going right - left ended up being best. Blur was first around the mark closely followed by Truck and Space Monkeys. Pleasure & Pain was a little further back followed by Crews Control, Blue Bandit and Mainiac. Ben's Laser was going well (its just called Laser) while Jacina was sailing the 420 nicely.

Pleasure & Pain caught up to the first three Sharpies on the windward/return lap and Mainiac overtook Blue Bandit and Crews Control. For the rest of the race the lead amongst the Sharpies changed a few times. Mainiac and Crews Control also had a good battle. At the start of the last work, Truck led closely from Space Monkeys, Blur and Pleasure & Pain. Truck managed to get a good lift by staying a little further right than the others and maintained about a minutes gap through to the finish. Space Monkeys crossed second with Blur and Pleasure & Pain about a minute further back. Next was Crews Control who beat Mainiac by 9 seconds and then Blue Bandit.

On the short course, Laser finished ahead of Italian Stallions. Hopefully after the school holidays we will start to see the MGs and more juniors sailing the afternoon races to build the short course fleet back up.

Pointscore results were Space Monkeys first, Crews Control second and Laser third. Progress results in the pointscore after three races are Mainiac first, Space Monkeys second and The Ribwich third.

Monohull race report 13 Sept 2014

The first race of the season always seems to be a little low in numbers - this one being no exceptions. Five boats rigged however Pleasure & Pain found that starting winter maintenance on the morning of the first race doesn't really work. Four boats ended up on the water for the start.

In what was hopefully an indication of the racing during this season the boats were very close together with minor tactical moves making the difference at the end. All four boats rounded the first mark abreast and then the wing mark in line astern. This continued for most of the race. The Ribwich pulled out a small lead with the three Sharpies swapping places. Space Monkeys managed to stay in front of Blur and Mainiac for most of the race .

On the last work, Blur caught Space Monkeys at the top mark but Space Monkeys held them off to cross the line 3 seconds ahead. The four boats finished within three minutes with The Ribwitch first, Space Monkeys second, Blur third and Mainiac fourth

Mainiac took first on pointscore by a few minutes with Blur second and The Ribwich third. There was only 50 seconds between second and fourth.

We will apparently have a much larger fleet next weekend. A couple of Sharpies are still looking for crew for the season - if interested please talk to me and I will let you know details.
