Monohull race report 11th October 2014

11/10/2014

What a lovely day for a sail. Nice NE breeze at the start, warm weather and a good fleet of boats on the water for our first handicap start of the season. With the Sharpie fleet being so close the spread of handicaps is not great - we were all interested to see how close the finish would be.

Mainiac sailed well up the first work to pull away from Crews Control after starting on the same handicap. Pleasure & Pain and Blur got off well together followed by Space Monkeys, Prawn Stars and Truck. The Laser started off scratch with both the Laser and Prawn Stars sailing the short course.

By the first mark, Mainiac had a good lead with Crews Control, Pleasure & Pain, Blur and Space Monkeys very close together. Prawn Stars was sailing well in the breeze and Truck was a couple of minutes back.

Space Monkeys got past Blur and Crews Control on the next work and caught up to Pleasure & Pain. The Laser was sighted capsized at the top mark a couple of times. Truck had made some small inroads to the rest of the fleet.

The third work really changed things round with Pleasure & Pain and Space Monkeys getting caught in a light patch in the middle of the course. Pleasure & Pain did the best job of recovery and pulled away a little. Mainiac had a 2 minute lead at this stage while Truck picked the shifts well to gain a fair bit of ground on the boats in front - finally overtaking Blur by the bottom mark the last time.

The wind swung significantly on the last work - Pleasure & Pain and Truck did best out of the change - Truck pulling about 2 minutes on the boats in front.

Prawn Stars won by a couple of minutes with Mainiac just holding off Pleasure & Pain for second place. Truck was fourth with Space Monkeys, Crews Control and Blur next. Truck ended up with fastest time.

A lovely day on the water - hopefully we get more days like it.
