Sharpie States Round 1 2012

24/11/2012

The Sharpie State Titles Round 1 were held in conjunction with the Kembla Klassic - with Saturday afternoon and both Sunday races being counted. This is the report from the Sharpie publicity officer :

Hi Everyone,

Well our first round of the NSW state titles was a ripper and thanks again to PKSC for putting on a great show, they clearly must be the number one volunteer based country club in NSW and still make the best hamburgers in the world.

14 boats lined up on the start, while this is a good number and we have consolidated it was dissapointing only 6 Canberra Boats could make the trip through various circumstances, considering we had 12 at a club championship only a 3 weeks before hand.

I tell you what the standard this year is the best I have seen, so many boats with new gear all the way down the fleet, the racing was so close and no position was safe.

Day 1 was an absolute special. Black Nor -easter time at the gong, 20-25knots with at times bigger puffs, strap yourself in and lets go! With all boats on the line for the start, it was hectic, DSRP raced off the pin and Mr. Freeze and DSRP gapped the fleet a bit on the first work with Mainiac not too far away, by the first wing mark probably 4 - 5 boats had pulled the pin with a bit of swimming being done by all. At the end of the 2nd work Mr. Feeze had extended a bit on DSRP with about the same gap back to Richo in Mainiac, DSRP had a swim not to far away from the top mark letting Mainiac slip through to 2nd and thats the way it stayed for the rest of the race. SMoke had a big swim on the first reach leaving their titles defence starting with a 4th. The boat park was full of beers, stories and laughter after a truly epic day, everyone had a great day even if results didnt go their way. It was a real Sharpie day thats for sure. Freeze Boys again too good on their home track in a good breeze.

Day 2,
2 heats were sailed in a light flicky Sou-easter and it was hot. in the first race smoke had a clean pair of heals in their favourite conditions and got away from the fleet for an all the way win, DSRP and Mr Freeze were burried in 11th and 12th respectively at the top mark which left Shorty in 2nd and Shazam, Mainiac, Irish Frog, Blur and the Bear fighting it out for 3rd. There were some big holes and some of the boats found them on the run letting Mr. Freeze back through, they sailed extremely well to get back to 2nd at the finish, with SHorty showing some good form in 3rd back to Mainiac 4th and DSRP recovered for 5th. Big effort by the Bear to get 6th and they had good speed in these conditions. The Southern Cross boys had their moments as well sitting in 5th for much of the race.

The next heat was much of the same, except Mr. Freeze looked well and truly gone out in front, only to find a frustrating hole and have smoke sail straight past them, they had a great race to the finsih with smoke hanging on. Irish Frog had a cracking race with super sheet hand Hayley calling the shots with local knowledge they were in contact with the 2 leaders to get 3rd and leave a massive gap back to Richo who came from 13th at the top mark first time to get back to 4th, I think Shazam was 5th, Shorty 6th, with juniors P&P and the Blur team fighting it out for 7th. Ian Ritchie was also having their best race Getting very close to Southern Cross at the end.

Again an awesome time had by everyone, The next big event is the Nationals, with Mr. Freeze and Smoke going pretty quick in a variety of conditons hopefully the NSW team can shake it up a bit this year.

Our next State event is Balmoral States on the weekend of the 16th of Feb lock it in, we want 20 boats at this regatta and getting back on the harbour after a 1 year absence.

Kembla Klassic 2012 Race reportĀ

A good number of our monohulls turned up for the Kembla Klassic over the weekend with all five Sharpies, two MGs, 470, 505 and even a couple of skyriders for one race.

Saturday turned out to be a challenge with a beautiful NE breeze in the morning and a black northeaster in the afternoon. Sunday had two very light easterlies. Wilful Intent retired while coming second in the MGs in the Saturday morning race after Amelia hurt herself. Spindrift retired as well with a broken tiller extension. Blur had a few swims in the first race but fared better for the rest of the series. Prawn Star only participated on Sunday where they sailed well against the other MGs.

The results are in the Kembla Klassic section. In division 2 which was combined Sharpie and 505, Mr Freeze finished first narrowly from Smoke with Mainiac 5th. Pleasure & Pain did well except for race two where they were the fastest boat upwind but swam on every downwind. Southern Cross had a best race of 7th, Blur 8th and Blowflies 4th.

PKSC crews also had a good time on other boats with Jess sailing on Dirty Deeds (the skipper was very impressed with her skills), Zoe on Proud Aussie on Saturday and Hayley on Irish Frog - I am sure it was Hayleys skills that got them a third in the last heat.

The KK was also the first three heats of the Sharpie State Titles. Results with no drops have Mr Freeze first and Mainiac 3rd.

Overall another successful Kembla Klassic - thanks to all the volunteers who helped run the event.

A juniors view of sharpie sailing

This was in our newsletter :

Hi my name is Riley and I sailed a sharpie last weekend, “Mr Freeze”.

Hayden was on trapeze, I was on main sheet and my dad skippered.

On the second work we were flying along when suddenly the wind dropped and Hayden got T-bagged (dunked in the water), I laughed.

My favourite bit was the last reach with the spinnaker up, we were planning, Hayden was on trap, me and dad were leaning out and the water was spraying like a barrel from the side of the boat.

Even though we didn’t win the lead changed a number of times between Maniac, Blur and us.

I wish we had a Go Pro on the boat to show how fast we were going. Brad better watch out or I might take his spot.

Monohull race report 17 Nov 2012

A good fleet of boats for the long course championship turned out today but only two for the short course. Wind was easterly and gradually improved as the race got under way. Mr Freeze was sailing with a junior Curry as sheethand for the day as Brad was away. Seems to me that it doesn't matter who is away from the crew they are fast !

Mainiac, Mr Freeze and Blur had a race long battle for the lead in the Sharpies. The Ribwich wasn't far behind. Blowflies and Pleasure & Pain went to the wrong side of the course at the start which wasn't a good move. Prawn Star decided to sail the long course in the absence of the other MGs. MrE was sailing OK until a big gust on the downwind leg had them swimming.

The last time round the windward mark, Mainiac had built up a lead on Blur and Mr Freeze. On the run to X, both of them ran Mainiac down with Mr Ribwich also taking advantage of the breeze filling in and catching up as well. At the last mark, all three Sharpies rounded together with Mainiac making the best of the last work to get line honours closely followed by Mr Freeze, Blur and The Ribwich.

Pointscore results were The Ribwich first, Mainiac second and Blowflies third. Club Championship had Mr Ribwich first, Mainiac second and Mr Freeze third.

I have been asked to also publish on the website the scratch yardstick results for the monos in the pointscore series. They are now available for viewing. I will try to keep up to date.

Monohull race report 10 Nov 2012

Yet another cold southerly on Saturday - I am sure the juniors are getting a bit frustrated - and I think some of our mono sailors must be too as we only had five boats for the race after such a good turnout last week.

During the morning the breeze was around 20 knots but it eased a little for the afternoon race - still a great 15+ with occasional stronger gusts.

Frank was still out injured on Please & Pain so Judy stood in again as forward hand with Nick back from HSC on sheet. From the start, Mainiac led with P&P in hot pursuit - they were handling the conditions really well. Wilful Intent was sailing upwind really quickly but overlaid the mark a little. Spindrift and Wilful Intent came in at the same time with Wilful Intent suffering the most - they capsized while giving way and stuck their mast in the mud. Hot Spots were showing that they have really started to master the NS and sailed very consistently - in fact I don't think they had a capsize at all.

P&P was right behind Mainiac still when setting spinnakers for the run on the second lap - unfortunately they managed to get the pole tangled badly and ended up not being able to use the Spinnaker for the rest of the race. Spindrift was sailing really well and Wilful Intent were recovering from their earlier swim.

Line honours went to Spindrift with Mainiac 14 seconds behind. Pointscore results were Mainiac first, Spindrift second and Hot Spots third. There was less than 5 minutes covering second through to fifth.

Thanks must go to the duty crew - they set a really nice course.

Next Saturday is CC3 and the following weekend is the Kembla Klassic - hopefully we get a really good fleet of monos on the water for both.

Monohull race report 3 Nov 2012

We have now had 18 members boats sailing in the monohull fleet this season which is really great - I can't wait for the day when all turn up at the same time ! This week we had a good fleet of 11 boats. Welcome to Emmett and Riley who sailed the afternoon race for the first time in their MJ - and did a very good job despite one capsize - hopefully more of the MJs will follow suit in the next few weeks.

The breeze was a light easterly at the start swinging between NE and SE on occasion. Once again Mr Freeze showed their early season form by picking the work well and leading round the first mark. They were followed by The Ribwich, Mainiac and Pleasure & Pain. I was a race where you could gain and lose heaps on the works which a number of boats did regularly. Southern Cross caught up on the second work by staying well into the northern shore and Pleasure & Pain lost a fair bit. Southern cross is sailing really quickly now - they just need to get away well at the start.

Tiger Moth was going well with Spindrift and Prawn Stars not far behind. Mr E was having their best race so far.

Things changed a bit in the second half of the race when a NE squall came through. Mainiac caught up to Mr Freeze and The Ribwich only to lose the breeze on the way to X. Spindrift, Red Devils and Mr E all had capsizes.

Most of the fleet finished close together across the line. Handicap results were Prawn Star first, The Ribwich second and Tiger Moth third. Red Devils finished a creditable 6th in their first afternoon race - well done boys.
