Catamaran Sailing Report 27/2/2016

29/2/2016

A warm cloudy day around 26 degrees Celsius with 6-13 knot E to ENE breeze provided great sailing conditions. Thirteen (13) catamarans came down “Felix the cat” with Bruce and Tin sailing around various parts of the course.

This week Keith and Rudi doing duty setting the course. The duty crew set a starboard course to suit the wind conditions and give some clearance to IYC youth regatta course near the entrance to IYC. Start line out front of the club northern side of Gooseberry Island, windward mark over towards the middle of the shallows and the wing mark near the middle of the lake. This week the wind conditions were lighter than those predicted. Championship 6 for large and small cats was held to make up for last weeks cancelled round. Luckily Hayden had a backup battery as the battery went flat and the response boat started to play up again. This time Hayden was able to track down a faulty regulator on the alternator. Hayden plans to sort out during the week.

Small cats split up White Wave, Dark Horse and Hot Pepper taking advantage of the Port bias of the start line the rest of the small cats choosing to start on Starboard. The split start went off without hitch and all cats avoiding each other for a successful start. White Wave and Dark Horse leading the way out to the windward mark going up the middle of the lake. With new mast rake setting Hot Pepper felt it was able to out point Dark Horse and was following White Wave in second place to the top mark. When approaching the top mark Hot Pepper tacked a little too early to try and stay in front of Dark Horse and ran out of room in irons and ended up running into the mark. At this point things turned pear shape as the large cats were looming up as were the other small cats.

So Hot Pepper ended up overshooting the buoy to get out of the way and to do penalty turn and then return to the race trailing all the small cats. The run down to the wing mark was a nice reach with wind angle around 80 degrees as was the run back to the bottom mark. The next time around the bottom mark Hot pepper headed out towards the entrance to IYC so could work up along the shallows to the windward mark. Some ground was made up however the leaders had a good lead.

On the home straight heading to the finish line the cats were met with an abundance of jelly fish hugging the southern shore.
As can be seen below Dark Horse and White Wave had an excellent tussle with less than 30 seconds separating them across the finish line. White Wave still consistently at the top with fill in crew Craig Standen as crew with regular crew Amie away. Aus902 and Pilot Error also had a very close race taking it right down to the wire.

See below for a summary of the cats combined times sorted on corrected time...

Tony Zhara is the total master. :-)
And Jody is definitely getting consistently closer

Catamaran Sailing Report 20/02/2016

21/2/2016

A warm cloudy day around 26 degrees Celsius with 11-16 knot breeze via Billy Ledger’s wind meter – BOM Albion Park advising up to 20 knot gusts. Looked like it would provide great sailing conditions. Twelve (12) catamarans came down for a sail. (see below list of who came down). With all the boats rigged up Steve Sellers and Trevor Dunn took on response boat and course setting duties. The plan was for course A this week. Response boat went out and the catamaran folks finished setting up.

Whilst rigging, Les Porter discovered his sailing day was over. The main traveller was about to tear off it’s mounting point at the rear beam.

It was noticed that the response boat had laid the 1st mark and was sitting behind it between the clubhouse and Gooseberry Island. As time went on it became obvious that there was something wrong with the response boat as it had not moved. Radio contact with the response boat confirmed that they had engine troubles and one of the TY’s would tow them back to the marina. Even after the best efforts of those involved the boat was not able to be started. Hence without a response boat (backup boat Puffa away with Flying 11 juniors) the day’s racing was abandoned.

There was obvious disappointment but I think it was better to be safe than sorry. Also we had no means of setting the course etc. So, Kurt and Bruce went out for a quick blast on their Nacra 5.8 Clewless and returned later with big grins saying the wind was perfect – solid and consistent.

I had a chat to Tony Zahra looking at boat setup and when comparing to some of the other Windrushes found that my mast was raked back significantly more than some of my fellow sailors (close to 250mm – 300mm). Hence we made some adjustments raking it forward, stiffening rig tension a little and making it the same as Tony Sanderson’s mast rake. Slightly more forward than Jack Kroek and Ralf Steyer.

At this point I decided to test this adjustment and Jack Kroek joined me. We did a big reach straight offshore out towards the other side of the lake. Going past what looked like 4 Paper Tigers sailing out of Koonawarra. Wind strength was perfect to trapeze, lighter than last week so was pretty much able to use full wind power most of the time. The southerly breeze pushing up some steep waves at times making the boat falter occasionally when punching through a particularly steep wave. Once over towards the other side of the lake we tacked over towards Windang bridge and the shallows (water much flatter over this way). Following Jack at this point the rake adjustment appeared favourable in helping pointing ability. Next week should be a good test. From here we had a nice broad reach back to shore. When we returned to shore Tony Sanderson made the suggestion that we should have sailed over to the Paper Tigers and may have been able to join them (hindsight is a wonderful thing!).

After packing up it was a refreshing cold shower as the hot water had tripped out.

Catamarans Race Report 6 February 2016

6/2/2016

A warm cloudy day around 25 degrees Celsius with 11-19 knot breeze provided great sailing conditions. Eleven (11) catamarans attending today. Ten (10) catamarans racing and “Felix the cat” doing their own thing.

Paul Monaghan also coming down but not able to sail as he had to go to work in the afternoon teaching pilots in a flight simulator. Ross Fyfe not sailing due to his knee also brought down his faithful dog and had a chat and socialise. He is waiting on his knee replacement a little later this month.

This week Ian Richardson and crew doing duty setting the course. With no TY's (All at a TY regatta) we had 3 starts. Division 2,3 and 4. Division 3 for small cats and division 4 for large cats. With the southern breeze there were a few white caps and it was pretty bumpy out front of the club.  The duty crew set a port course.

Start line out front of the club southern side of Gooseberry Island, windward mark over towards the middle of the shallows and the wing mark near the southern side of the entry to ITC bay. Tim MakePeace and David Zahra went out a little early on their F18 and could be seen scorching across the lake under kite. The balance of the cats left around 10 minutes before the start and easily made it over to the start line in a couple of minutes.

A few wondered what he was doing when Ross Boyd on Symphony2 had to dart out of the way as the small cats start coincided with him advising the duty crew that he noticed a capsized craft over to the side of the lake.  Most of the small cats were closely packed heading across the start line.

Majority chose starboard tack heading east towards the entrance to the IYC before tacking and heading south towards the top mark. On the 1st work to the windward mark not a lot separated the small cats. The works were exhilarating with plenty of spray and hulls flying. Hot Pepper gaining confidence on the trapeze getting good boat speed but still needing to work on pointing to mix it with his more experienced piers.

With good angles the small cats were able to broad reach directly to the wing and starting marks when sailing the triangle. There was plenty of spray flying as the cats skimmed across the waves. Dark Horse in particular appeared to be enjoying the downwind legs. A number of the cats afterward advised occasionally a hull digging into the back of a wave causing spray to explode over their boat. White Wave’s strategy varied to that of others and kept heading over toward the IYC when rounding the bottom mark and heading up a less bumpy shallows route. Majority of other cats chose to head straight up towards the middle mud stick south of Gooseberry island before tacking over to the top mark. Jack Kroek on Jack Pot was in a commanding position when on the last triangle rounding the start mark for the final time had an uncharacteristic capsize when stepping out on the wire his dog bone disengaged causing him to go for a swim and allowing a number of other boats to catch up and pass.

Tome Makepeace and David Zahra on their F18 narrowly crossing the finish line around 3 seconds in front of Ross Boyd on his A class Symphony 2. Next only around 6 minutes later Whitewave had a convincing win in small catamarans division followed a few minutes later by Groove Thing, closely followed by Dark Horse, then only 6 seconds separated Billyo, Playtime and Jackpot for a very tight sprint to the line. The catamarans were then closed out by Hot Pepper and Blue Tongue.
Scratch times across finish line were as follows
(small cats start time 14:12: 08 & large cats start time 14:17:08 as per my wrist watch):

15:13:59 Tim Makepeace & Dave Zahra AUS47 “Tim F18” 15:14:02 Ross Boyd 860 "Symphony 2" A Class Classic
