TY Delegates Report 23 February 2013

Sailing was cancelled due to the inclement weather. A very sensible decision I think given what was about to transpire. I arrived at about 11:10 hours to find the club shut and not a sole around but it was about this time that the wind picked up and the rain pelted harder. The Frou Frou crew had to put plan B into action and regrouped at a near by café to debrief and eat nice things and to talk about what we might do with the rest of the day. Thoughts of taking the beloved to the movies, doing the dishes, pottering in the garden amongst other ideas were discussed. The irony of having Saturday sailing cancelled is that it generally means free time, free time that could be spent writing the TY Delegates report but with no sailing, there is no sailing to report on.

However there are a couple of important TY sailing events coming up worth mentioning.

Marlay Point Overnight Race:
Marlay Point is on again 9 -10 March. Frou Frou will be heading south to represent PKSC and would like some company.

Basin Classic:
We have very recently been advised of another event at the popular St Georges Basin venue, a seventeen to twenty nautical mile around the basin race, on 23 March with an 11:00 hour starting time. Please go to the Sussex Inlet St Georges Basin Yacht Club web site for additional details.

See you at the club next Saturday.

TY Delegates Report 16 February 2013

Although we had a good roll up for the junior learn to sail morning it was a quiet afternoon at the club as a result of few conflicting away events this weekend. Three, TYs turned up at PKSC but planned to sail in the Lord Mayors cup at the IYC. I must admit to feeling a little guilty about not supporting Port Kembla sailing on the day. Hopefully we made up for it by eating and drinking lots from the PKSC canteen before and after the race.

Unfortunately Diggers crew did not show up in time, so Grey Fox stayed on dry land. That left Dave Arthur and Keith aboard Offshore Account and, me Peter and Adam aboard Frou Frou to uphold the honour of PKSC. Welcome aboard to Adam. Adam is new to the club and very new to sailing. This was Adams first time on a TY and third time on a sailing boat with two of those times happening today.

The two short triangular course format used for today’s event created interesting and close racing between the Ten or so competitors (should have taken more notice), and the weather, no rain and ten to fifteen knots from the South East, perfect conditions really, just right for taking out Adam for his first TY race.

So how did we do? I am not sure. We didn’t attend the IYC for race results. But from my perspective at least, Offshore Account sailed very well finishing up with the leaders in both races. Frou Frou had issues with her spinnaker halyard so was not able to set a spinnaker which slowed her up on the down wind legs so I don’t imagine we finished in the money.

Results will be posted to me and I will convert them into PKSC TY Pointscore 16 results.

Next Saturday is Pointscore 17. If conditions are anything like last Saturday it will be a sailing day not to miss. Get yourself, boats, and crews organised and join us on the water.

TY Delegates Report 9 February 2013

What we were hoping for was a nice gentle 5 to 10 knots for today’s Pointscore 15 and handicap race; something to ease us less ferociously than last Saturday’s weather into February and to the second half of the year. But alas that was not to be.
What greeted the fleet including the 6 TY’s was more like 20 knots from the north, and building. It wasn’t shaping up to our expectation of sipping our cups of tea down the square runs.
The pre start conditions took their toll on Rosstered Off, retiring with a damaged rudder fitting before crossing the start line.

Thanks to the Porters, Rob, Bob, Josh and Rose aboard the starters boat for setting a good course that suited the conditions.

I may be slightly exaggerating about the wind strength, but it was still strong enough to warrant shortening sails and thinking seriously about the value of setting spinnakers on the reaches. It also may have seemed like a baptism of fire for Grey Fox and Diggers new crew member Leo. Welcome Leo, I hope you come back again.

From our perspective aboard Frou Frou, the rest of the fleet looked in fine condition. Dave, Rob and Arthur aboard Offshore Account were revelling in the heavier conditions upwind and Wayne Joel and Dale aboard Serenity looking ever more comfortable working as a team.

We never got close enough to see how John and Ray aboard The Blonde were tracking but am assured they kept things under control and probably did not even get splashed by a wave.

The handicap start set us up for a very exciting finish with Serenity, Offshore Account and Frou Frou pacing each other down the final reach to the X mark. Not far behind followed Grey Fox who experienced some mainsail issues that slowed them up over the final couple of legs. Needless to say all boats doing the long course finished within five minutes of each other, very exciting indeed.

Line Honours and Short Course
First across the line, and, first on handicap for the short course (last as well) was The Blonde.

Long Course
After adjusting for pointscore handicaps, Serenity with Wayne Joel and Dale aboard were first, Offshore Account with Dave, Rob and Arthur aboard were second, Frou Frou with Peter, Alan and me aboard were Third and Grey Fox with Digger and Leo aboard were forth.

As always, sailing was the winner on the day and we were all happy we made the effort to spend the day on the water. That can never be a waste of time in my books.

Next week is Pointscore No 16. At the same time the Lord Mayors Cup is being run at the IYC.
