TY Delegates Report 27 February 2016
I thought we were in for a blowy wet race but how wrong you can be with the weather.
The few rain showers we had during rigging and lunch time cleared away to a nice cloud -covered day with a light 5 to 8 knot South Easterly breeze.

Starters for today’s race were Serenity with Wayne and Connor aboard, Momentum with Barry, Ray, John and Greg aboard, Rosstered Off with Jim, Richard and Shaun aboard and Frou Frou with Alan, Andy and me aboard.

Thanks very much to our duty crew Keith and Rudy for giving up their Saturday afternoon to setting us a good course even though the shifty wind made it difficult.

As mentioned above it was another beautiful day to on the water with a light south easterly breeze; enough to make it interesting up the works and down the runs. If you went the right way up the works in the shifty light winds, things were good; but if you went slightly the wrong way you could end up in a position that you hadn’t planned on. Frou Frou was in a good position to witness the great racing between Rosstered Off and Momentum with the lead changing between them often during the race. Whatever the guys did aboard Momentum last week, during the on the water tuning session, really paid off. Momentum had good speed up- and down-wind and was pointing much better in the lighter conditions. In the end this gave Momentum the advantage to finish the race just ahead of Rosstered Off.
But the real surprise today was Serenity. Wayne and Connor had her trucking in the light and shifty winds. Hopefully we will see even better results ahead for Serenity (but not too good).

And so to today’s results for Pointscore 18
Place     Boat Name        Corrected Time PBH (CBH)
First       Serenity               67.72 (73.16)
Second  FrouFrou             68.55 (68.55)
Third     Momentum         69.52 (70.33)
Forth    Rosstered Off      72.54 (70.93)

No sailing for TYs this coming weekend but I hope that all of you who can, will turn up and assist with running the Kembla Kat Regatta.

Just another reminder that the Marley Point Overnight Race is on 12-13 March and, the St Georges Basin Sussex Inlet Sailing Club Basin Chase is on 19 March.

TY Delegates Report 20 February 2016
Today’s race was a bit of an anticlimax. Not only were quite a few of the regular starters unable to sail, but also the fickle finger of fate played a part in shaping the outcome of today’s activities.
As far as our regular TY fleet goes, Grey Fox is taking an enforced rest break, Frou Frou is temporarily out of action with a broken mainsheet traveller and Rosstered Off was floating around St Georges Basin and was unable to make it back in time for the race.  That left Serenity with Wayne, Richard Lech and Richard Hipsley aboard and Momentum, with Barry, Ray, John and Roy aboard as the only starters for today’s event.  You only need two boats for a good race though.
Thanks to Steve Sellers for giving up his time for us today as duty crew.
The wind was consistent at between 15 - 20 knots from the South East when Steve and I headed out to lay the buoys. Things were going very well until we started motoring out into the middle of the lake to position the top and wing marks. The duty boat motor decided to play up. We stopped to check whether something was caught around the propeller. All OK except we could not get the motor started again. It was great having someone like Steve aboard in moments like this. Steve knows stuff about boats and motors, but even his expertise could not get us started again leaving us no option but to call ashore for help.
Both Serenity and Momentum came to our rescue and Momentum was able to throw us a line and tow the “Wal Curry”   back to the safety of the launching ramp. Not the easiest thing to do when there is a boisterous southerly wind whipping up waves and making life bumpy.  And this in my opinion is another great thing about TYs. TYs are self sufficient.  If something goes wrong aboard a TY you can usually get back to safety without the need of outside assistance and without the added risk of putting other boats and crew in danger.
Thanks also to the skipper and crew of Momentum for picking up the buoys already laid and Richard Hipsley for organising and flying the race abandonment flags ashore.
Unexpected things happen in life, so that was the end of our race day, but just because the race was cancelled didn’t mean sailing was cancelled. Momentum and Serenity took this opportunity to go out and do some fine tuning and, despite the fickle finger of fate stuffing up the race, the crews aboard Momentum and Serenity ended up having a great day on the water. And that’s how it should be.

Upcoming events

Just a reminder that the Marley Point Overnight Race is on 12-13 March.
Also the St Georges Basin Sussex Inlet Sailing Club, Basin Chase is on 19 March again this year. It’s a wonderful event and if the majority of TYs participate we can discuss using the results of the race for one of our scheduled club Pointscores/Championship race results.

TY Delegates Report 13 February 2016
Today we joined in an experiment. Momentum with Barry, Ray and Richard L aboard, Rosstered Off with Jim Dave, Richard H and Shaun and Frou Frou with Andy, Wayne and me aboard were on the water to help with testing a short back to back race course format for the upcoming Cat regatta in March.
The strong north easterly made it tough for the crews setting up the course and doing the starts and finishes.  Thanks to Paul Jack, Tony and Jodi for taking on this difficult role today.
It was a very boisterous conditions for the first start, and as it turned out things didn’t go quite to plan for any of us TY’s.  Just after Frou Frou crossed the start line the mainsail tack came loose from the tack. We spent quite a lot of time preventing any damage and re-lashing it to the mast. At this point we continue racing but to our surprise Rosstered Off had starting late and Momentum had not yet started and was hovering behind the start line. We figured that given the problems we had perhaps Rosstered off and Momentum had also experiencing difficulties that had delayed them.
That first triangle of the first race went quickly for us with Rosstered Off just ahead and Momentum now started, some way behind us. Even the windward and return leg was going OK for the TY fleet. That is until the fickle finger of fate intervened on the final jibe for Frou Frou when her mainsheet traveller smashed of the end of the track leaving her with little control of the main. Rosstered Off and Frou Frou  did finish but shortly after that the finish line was moved before Momentum had an opportunity to cross.  Without a main sheet traveller Frou Frou retired and headed back to shore. It felt like a lot of work for less than an hour all up on the water.
Apparently the second race went off without a hitch, with Momentum and Rosstered Off, the only TYs remaining, left to do battle.
I must admit that the beer back at the club tasted very good and there was plenty of race debriefing material to talk about as well.
After discussing the circumstances and confusion around today’s first race start was decided to abandon race one and count race 2 only in today’s results.

Results for Pointscore 16

Position     Boat Name        Corrected time PBH (CBH)
First              Rosstered Off     34.60 (33.83)
Second        Momentum         35.32 (35.74)
Forth            Frou Frou            DNF

I hope you will all make the effort to get crew and have your boats on the water for Saturday.
The end, Trev.

TY Delegates Report for Sussex Inlet St Georges Basin Regatta 4 – 5 February.
“How good is this”.
The Sussex Inlet and Basin Yacht Club puts on what I think is the nicest event of the TY sailing calendar, outside PKSC events that is. The club is always welcoming, consistently well organised, consistently fair and always generous with their time and friendship. Why wouldn’t you keep on going back to support this event.
Who showed up from PKSC:
Hataitai II with Connor, Ryley, Mica, Andrew, Cormac and Jesse aboard; Momentum with Barry, Ray, John, and Greg aboard; Whitewash with, Rod, Alistair, Andy and Aaron aboard; Rosstered Off with Jim, Richard, Shaun, Dave and Leo aboard; Breakaway with Hayden, Steve, Brad and Todd aboard; Serenity with Wayne, Daniel and Derek aboard and Frou Frou with Paul, Stephen Sullivan and me aboard.
The Sailing:
The young sailors piloting Hataitai II showed us all how to handle a boat in heavy weather during the passage race on Saturday and for their first time racing a trailer yacht as a crew they were easily outpacing and outpointing Frou Frou upwind on the first leg. They were impressive on the water and stole the hearts of the other participating sailors. I believe the future looks bright for our club if this is any indication of the quality of persons that will take over from us old (grumpy) members.
This weekend St Georges Basin had a strange effect on Rosstered Off and her usually well drilled crew. She was not performing anywhere near her best. Unless of course the plan was to give all us other competitors a chance at a podium finish. The most obvious examples of her departure from perfection sailing were during Saturdays race, pulling off a spectacular broach at the first jibe mark where she spent a long period of time on her side. Then, a couple of legs later she jettisoned Dave overboard during another spinnaker set with the consequence of having to turn around and pick him up. On Sunday she just sailed uncharacteristically slow on all points of sail. There was a lot of weed about on the course (and I don’t mean the illicit drug type of weed but the seaweed type of weed), so I would like to suggest she had a big clump of it stuck on her keel.
Breakaway’s crew wore a number of sailing apparel options (some onlookers unkindly described this as “silly looking headwear options”) which I now believe made the difference in the boats speed. On both race days, in Saturdays 25 knots with the “Where is Wally” hats and Sundays 5 to 10 knots with the “Red Curly Wig” numbers, participants were entertained by Breakaway and her crew, all be it briefly at the start. We watched her pull away from the fleet and vanish into the distance and didn’t see her again until moored back up in Sussex Inlet creek at the other end of the days racing.
It would be remiss of me if I didn’t make mention of the fine performance Momentum on both race days. Her crew really had her trucking in all points of sail, especially the downwind legs.
I guess the mixed sailing experiences from the weekend TY regatta demonstrate how challenging sailing can be. You think you have everything sorted and then a new unexpected variable is thrown into the mix making you aware of the need to be prepared to learn from the experience, to reassess your responses and building on your repertoire of sailing skills. Perhaps that’s what keeps us coming back for more.
There were certainly plenty of other good performance moments, on and off the water over the weekend from our Port Kembla Sailing Club TY sailors that I hope provide lasting good memories of the weekend away. It was also great to catch up with our TY sailing buddies from other clubs, and, despite the mixed sailing results, I think that the PKSC sailors who attended would all say they had a wonderful weekend on the water.
Preliminary results for Saturdays race, 4 February (Championship 6)
Place         Boat Name            Corrected time in minutes CBH (PBH)
First            Breakaway               86.92 (86.92)
Second       Momentum             93.69 (92.93)
Third           Froufrou                  93.82 (93.82)
Forth           Serenity                   95.01 (89.22)
Fifth             Hataitai II                 98.53 (98.53)
Sixth            Rosstered Off         99.97 (101.95)
Seventh      Whitewash              101.50 (100.68)

Just a reminder that this coming weekend the Manly Junior States will be on at PKSC so no race for us.  If you have some spare time we could use your help at the club with the running of the event.  The next time on the water for PKSC TYs will be 18 February.
