TY Delegates Report 29 October 2011

TY Delegates Report 29 October 2011

I am struggling to find something different to report on for Saturday’s race. I could talk about the weather conditions; Overcast with variable 5 to 10 knots of East North East to North East winds. Or I could talk about who turned up for the start of race 7 of the pointscore Series; Rosstered Off with Jim, Shaun, John and Dave aboard, Grey Fox with Digger and new crew members Mitch and Jodie aboard, and Frou Frou with me Pete and new crew Richard aboard. Or I could talk about race highlights. However I find this difficult to identify what these might have been for other competitors from our observational position in the middle of a dispersed fleet. What I should have done, and will do in the future is to take a moment at the “end of the race clubhouse gathering and debrief” to talk more to my sailing buddies to find out in more detail what they thought about the race. All I can do for this report is provide a description from Frou Frou’s point of view and hopefully it will be of interest to readers.

Grey Fox and Rosstered Off were very considerate by doing things that, at least to us, seemed to improve Frou Frou’s race position. I hope it wasn’t that they felt sorry and wanted to to make us feel better about our sailing ability. Grey Fox and crew gave us a big scare up the first work, rounding the top mark just astern. They made some very good strategic choices to pick the wind shifts up this leg of the course, their performance made more impressive as Digger was orienting his brand new crew members. I have a feeling that Mitch and Jodie are naturally gifted so hopefully we will enjoy seeing more of their successful sailing exploits during the season. Anyway their performance knocked us out of our complacency making us concentrate and try harder for the rest of the race.
Rosstered Off used a less subtle but just as effective approach of waited for us while sailing third work. Richard noticed that they had stopped ahead and mentioned that they may be in trouble, and how upset he was for this to happen to another competitor. Peter and I agreed by expressing our concern for their misfortune. They said they ran aground in the shallows. However, given the kind and generous competitors they are, we think they ran aground on purpose to give us a chance to catch up make us feel better about our sailing ability.
So thank you Rosstered Off and Grey Fox, you are all very considerate sailors. We will attempt to do the same for you on other occasions.

Results for Pointscore 7:
First on handicap Frou Frou, second Grey Fox and third Rosstered Off.

Jervis Bay Challenge and Try Sail.
Next week many of us will be heading South to participate in Saturdays around Jervis Bay Challenge race. As with previous years and If there are no objections, and there are enough starters in this event, I will use our results for Championship 3 Pointscore 8 results. Otherwise we can reschedule Championship 3 for another time.
After the race some of us will be heading back for the Try Sail event at Port Kembla Sailing Club on Sunday. Unfortunately Frou Frou has a prior engagement and will not be able to join you at Try Sail, but will look forward to sailing with you on 12 November for Poinscore 9.

TY Delegates Report for 22 October 2011

I was fortunate enough to view todays race from the perspective of the duty crew boat with Alan and Richard, my two companions on the day. Always a good safe spot to pass judgement on participating boats and their crew as they juggle with the complexities of sailing around a course as quickly as possible.

However interesting the other starters in today’s fleet were my job article is to write about the Trailer Yachts. That is not to say the TYs were uninteresting, on the contrary. What they lacked in numbers they made up for in enthusiasm, with the three TY starters making the best of the light north easterly breeze, perfecting their tacks and jibs on each leg of the course.

For me and my fellow duty crew Alan and Richard one of the observations we were able to make was how much could be gained in these light conditions from a good quick tack or spinnaker set and jibe. Or conversely, if not performed so well, how much could be lost doing the same manoeuvrer (mental note next time doing the same thing aboard Frou Frou). And incidentally, during the 2 ½ hours Alan, Richard and I were on board the “Wal Curry think tank” we solved most of the major economic and social issues confronting the planet. Amazing what you can do if you put a few heads together. Maybe that is how we could attract more duty crews by advertising that the most difficult problem confronting you at that moment could be solved merely by being aboard the duty boat. All jokes aside, for me and probably for many of you reading this as well, this isn’t far from the truth. Being on the water watch the magic of sailing, observing how beautifully boats can glide through the waves, and how spectacular the Illawarra escarpment looks from this angle, helps you focus your thoughts on what is really important.

Anyway down to the business of who won todays heat 6 of the 2011 -2012 Pointscore Series. With less than 3 minutes on corrected time between finishers and in first place was Out of Exile with Bob, Rob, Jef, Johny and Laurie (forgive me if I have interpreted you name form the sign on sheet incorrectly) , followed very closely in second place by Rosstered Off with Jim, Richard, Wayne and Shaun aboard in second place and just behind in third place was Grey Fox with Digger and Danny aboard.

I have been advised that historically handicaps were calculated after assessing the first 4 race finishes of new boat in the fleet. It seems to be a fair and reasonable way to proceed, but please let me know if you have any objections to continuing this method.

I hope you all can make the effort to sail in next weeks Pointscore 7. See you then.

TY Delegates Report 16 October 2011

I was sure it would keep on raining so had planned out the rest of the day with other activities like reading the paper and having lunch out with Margaret. And wouldn’t you know it, the rain stopped, the wind came in ever so lightly and the sun shone. We had to get back into sailing action thinking and rig up for the second race of the championship series.

Even though the weather was behaving somewhat unpredictably, the one thing that we can always be assured of is the good tasting hamburgers and the great service dished out by the canteen crew.

Its just as well the conditions improved because Digger and Danny were back with Grey Fox to keep us honest on and off the water, plus nice to see Nirvana 7 and crew and Out of Exile and crew turn up to support the championship series.

Just before start the wind was very shifty and light, but Deno,Tony, and Dante aboard the starters boat held their collective nerve and waiting for the wind to settle in before setting a fair course for us. A fine course it was too. The shorter start line made for an exciting and close start with Rosstered Off forcing Nirvana 7 up close to the starters boat. Frou Frou and Out of Exile elected to start in clear air further down the line and Grey Fox starting just behind the pack at the boat end tacking quickly to take advantage of clear air on port. With the north easterly wind remained light and steady the larger boats were restricted to below their potential hull speed, advantaging the smaller boats in the fleet.

Apart from the jostling at the start the race progressed in an orderly fashion, at least from Frou Frou’s observational point of reference. It was another one of those days where your first impressions are that it will most likely be unpleasant but the reality turns out to be the opposite, a beautiful sunny and pleasant day on the water. Where else could there be a better thing to do on a Saturday.

Now on to the formalities.

Championship Heat 2 Results:
First Frou Frou with Crew Trev Alan and Peter. Second Out of Exile with crew Bob, Rob, Paul, and Laurie. Third Rosstered Off with crew Dave, Wayne, Shaun and Richard. Forth Nirvana 7 with crew Keith, Rebecca and apologies for a name I cannot translate. Fifth Grey Fox with Digger, Danny and Tony.
Pointscore Heat 5 Results:
First Grey Fox, second Frou Frou, third Out of Exile, forth Rossteered Off, and fifth Nirvana 7.

Look forward to seeing as many as possible of you at next week’s heat 6 of the Pointscore series.

To finish we should spare a thought for Rob Lawler and Dave Morris will be out of action for a number of weeks as various bits of their bodies have let them down. We wish them a speedy recovery to good and lasting health.

The end Trev.

TY Delegates report 8 October 2011

Saturday’s race reminded me of a saying you may be familiar with, about people who choose to travel the path less trodden. Except I was mistaken, it’s not a saying at all but a misrepresentation of a line in a poem by Robert Frost (1874 – 1963) titled “The Road Not Taken”(see below). I digress. The connection made with what I thought was a saying was that there are many different ways a boat and crew can choose to plot their course. As today’s race was a handicap start it allowed for even more choices, especially if you disregarded the direction flags displayed on the starters boat. Most of us took the boring best likelihood of the shortest “most travelled” path to the first mark while the more adventurous of us, for example Dave, Keith and Mitch aboard Offshore Account, took the braver more interesting option of the “path less travelled”. Offshore Account even added some additional spice by approaching the top mark rounding against the generally accepted interpretation of the course directions, which caused some confusion amongst the other competitors rounding the mark in the other direction. Dave recons it was a “senior’s moment” and not a conscious decision to take the path less travelled. Sociologists might call taking the path less travelled deviant behaviour. I prefer to think of it as selecting the direction to get the most joy from the journey over a mundane but shorter trek to the top mark that might win a race. We salute you Offshore Account.

Regarding the rest of the race, from Frou Frou’s perspective anyway, we watched the rapidly approaching faster boats Rosstered Off and Out of Exile making easy work of the light winds with Out Of Exile just overtaking Rosstered Off on the final downwind leg to the x mark.

If the wind hadn’t died off in the last 30 minutes or so of the race I think the allocated handicaps (worked out from previous race finishing margins) would have resulted in much closer finishing times. As it was, Frou Frou crossed the line first followed by Out Of Exile, Rosstered Off, then Offshore Account on the dying afternoon breeze.

Most of us would agree that even though it did rain a little near the end the gentile winds made for a very pleasant if not slightly wet race.

The end Trev.

Robert Frost (1874 – 1963). Mountain Interval. 1920.

1. The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Starting the journey and staying alive and healthy

As you may recall at the end of last season I put out a challenge to you all to get out and be active during the off season, and, whilst doing so, help collect some important data for my study about the outdoor activity levels and fitness of the sexes. To recap, my theory is that more females are participating in outdoor activities, like running walking and cycling, than males. As a consequence females are becoming slimmer and fitter and males are getting fatter and les fit. From speaking to club members and employing action research techniques at last Saturdays sailing event it did not appear that many of you were able to fulfil my challenge and data collection request.

So I have another proposal for those of you that may be interested. On Saturday morning before sailing we go for a 30 minute walk (or run for those who are more mobile) along the lake foreshore and, whilst thusly engaged, do some observations of the passing active sexes then. If my casual observations are correct most of you will have some free time between 10:00 and 11:00 and be available to fit in a stroll for the betterment of society and science.

In the words of Michelle Bridges, “Pump up princess, get out and get active, your life depends on it if you want to stay healthy”.

I will be kicking off this Saturday from the club house at 10:00 if anyone is interested.
