TY Delegates Report 26 October 2013, Pointscore 6

TY Delegates Report 26 October 2013, Pointscore 6
Today’s ten to fifteen knot southerly swung back and forth to the east during the first half of the race and in the end settled to more or less the north east. Add to this thirty or so 16 footers sailing a different course competing in a round of their state titles made for a tricky conditions for racing on the lake.
Thanks to Andy and Peter for managing the extra complexities as duty crew and setting the course for us that attempted to avoid tangling with the 16s as much as possible. It sure made for an interesting port tack to the top mark when the PKSC fleet crossed the 16s coming of the start on a starboard tack. Those bow poles did not look very inviting heading for you.
Jim, Richard, Shaun and Peter aboard Rosstered Off made it past the oncoming 16s on their way up the second work. Jim told me they were very upset looking behind to see Frou Frou, Grey Fox and The Blonde caught up in it and having to manoeuvre around the 16s losing time and distance to the top mark. They obviously did not feel bad enough to stop and wait for us to catch up though.
Rosstered Off just kept on increasing the gap between the rest of the TY fleet crossing the line well ahead of Frou Frou, Grey Fox and The Blonde.
All in all, sharing the lake with lots of quick boats sailing a different course made for a very interesting day on the water.
Pointscore 6 Final Places
Long Course
First Grey Fox with Digger and Leo aboard. Second Rosstered Off with Jim Richard, Shaun and Peter aboard, and third Frou Frou with Rebecca, Alan Peter and Trev aboard.
Short Course
The Blonde first across the line and first on handicap with John and Ray aboard. As finishing times become more consistent and predictable for boats choosing the short course a correction factor will be trialled in order to adjust between the long and short course finishing times so that we include all starters and end up with one lot of places for the Pointscore series.
Just a reminder that next Saturdays scheduled Championship Race 3 has been postponed till the following Saturday 9 November.
For those boats travelling to compete in next Saturdays Jervis Bay Challenge race, round 1 of the traveller’s series, good luck.

TY Delegates Report 19 October 2013
Saturday’s race was a good example of how you don’t need lots of boats to have a good race. Three boats took the start for today’s Championship race number 2, Momentum with Barry John Ray and new crew member Michael aboard, Rosstered Off with Jim back from his and Glenda’s terrestrial circumnavigation of Australia, Richard, and Dave and temporary new crew member Michael aboard and Frou Frou (this race on time for the start) with Peter, Paul and Daniel (up from the junior sailing program) and Trev aboard. The start was closely contested with all three boats hitting the line at about the same time. Wind speed of 20 knots with gusts to 25 knots made the up wind journey to the first mark a challenge. Even more of a challenge for Momentum as the small headsail was left back in Barry’s garage for the second week in a row. That error slowed up Momentums progress significantly upwind, sometimes going sideways more than frontways at times.
The three of us went conservative on the first reach and run with Rosstered Off leading the way. The second work Rosstered Off tamed her flappy main and snuck further ahead by the top mark and even further down the square run. Frou Frou had a very comfortable downwind leg but in Rosstered Offs wake could see her chance of a race victory slipping away with the over canvassed momentum was unable to make any ground on the two boats ahead.
And that’s the way the fleet ended up for the rest of the race with Rosstered off finishing a good seven minutes ahead of Frou Frou with Momentum hampered by too much sail on the day finishing a further 5 minutes or so later.

Congratulations to Rosstered Off on her first race for the season. We will all have to lift our game if we are to get close to a podium finish against her.

Our TY sailing family wishes Barry success with his shoulder surgery on Tuesday 22 October and hope that his convalescence is short. We need him back in fighting form as quickly as possible.

TY Delegates Report 12 October 2013

TY numbers swelled to 3 for the first Championship race of the season.
With the wind building from the north east to 20 knots and the sun shining there was no weather related excuses for staying ashore.
Frou Frou’s crew were excited because it was the first race for a new mainsail. Frou Frou also welcomed aboard Rebecca, a new crew member for the season.
Momentums crew were excited because they got to go out on the water together one more time before Captain Barry has to take some sailing Saturdays off while his shoulder heals properly after surgery.
Grey Foxes crew were excited because Captain Digger was still alive and Leo showed for the first outing for this season.
Although the TY fleet was small you would have to say they were raring to go and full of promise.
The strengthening north easterly was making it difficult to hoist Frou Frou’s fancy new mainsail. Her gallant and determined crew of Rebecca, Alan and Peter got it half way up when it jammed and would go no further up or down. They eventually headed back to shore to drop the mast and un-jam the halyard from the top. Consequently Frou Frou missed the start, but did join in for the second triangle to get some important sailing experience with an new main and crew.
Momentums crew reported having a sail related problem as well. In the first half of the race at least her performance in the strong breeze was somewhat hindered by the absence of a smaller headsail that was left at home by the skipper.
Grey Fox sensibly reefed early, giving them the edge up wind for the first few legs in the 20 knots.
Bill and Richard, the duty crew for the day were kept very busy looking after capsizing dinghies and cat sailors struggling with the strong north easterly. I suppose in general terms 20 knots plus may not be considered an excessively strong breeze; it’s just that I believe most of us had not experienced them since the end of last season. We were all suffering from the start of the season rustiness.
Momentum selflessly gave up her lead position to stand by one of our capsized dinghies being blown downwind towards Oak Flats.
With the winds easing slightly during the final stages of the race Momentum showed us her class by hoisted her spinnaker for the last downwind run.

Final Placing Championship 1
First on CBH and PBH was Momentum with Barry, Ray, John and Ralf aboard. Second was Grey Fox with Digger and Leo aboard. As mentioned Frou Frou recorded a “did not start” for the race.
All credit to the finishers; it was still fun to be out on the water and post-race debriefing in the clubhouse.

See more of you at the next race I hope.

TY Delegates Report 5 October
No sailing to report this week due to holidays or from the previous week due to strong winds.
I want to mention my appreciation the offers of assistance to fill the gaps in the duty crew roster I received from club members. I was overwhelmed by the response to the Gail’s email request for assistance. Thank you to all who offered and to those who offered on behalf of their spouses. It makes me proud to be associated with people like you.
As mentioned, the last sailing day scheduled for Championship No. 1 race was cancelled. We agreed to reschedule Championship No 1 race to this coming Saturday replacing the handicap start race as scheduled on our sailing calendar.See you there.
