TY Delegates Report 17 November 2012

I find it difficult to write about an event I don’t have personal experience of. Suffice to say that, as Frou Frou is still injured and out of action we were unable to participate in Saturdays race, I am using this as my excuse for not reporting on how the race went for the TY’s who turned up for today’s event. At the time of Saturday’s briefing though conditions were looking perfect for a pleasant afternoon on the water. Not too windy and not too hot. I hope these conditions were reflected in a rewarding experience for the crews who competed.

However, you readers are not getting out of it that lightly. I will write about something this week I am familiar with and that may or may not be of interest to you, the treatment of Frou Frou’s injured stern and how she is recovering.

Before Saturdays briefing I was talking casually to my sailing buddies about my progress with repairs and the need to dry out Frou Frou’s injured stern before the next phase of work could be carried out (see following photos). Not surprisingly I received advice and offers of assistance with carrying out the said repairs. Rob Lawler offered me a device used for warming patients in hospital beds he thought may speed up the drying out process. He was even considerate enough to drop it off at my house. From Rob’s description I was a little sceptical of how a bed warming device could be used in boat repair applications (reading between the lines I had a suspicious that Rob had this item cluttering up his garage and this presented an opportunity to relocate it on a semi-permanent bases). How wrong I was, and now regret my suspicions and offer my sincere apologies to Rob. The patient bed warming device has been the perfect thing to use (see attached photo) drying out the back of the boat at a comforting 42 degrees Celsius in a silent, safe and professional manner. As a consequence Frou Frous damaged stern should be ready for fibre glassing sometime in the next few days. Who could have imagined that skills in nursing and boatbuilding would be required for these repairs?

Perhaps the most importantly lesson from this was of how important it is, when brainstorming solutions to problems, to be open minded, not make assumptions and never discount ideas until they are tested.

Results for Saturdays Pointscore 9.

Long Course
First place Out of Exile with Bob Rob Josh and Johny aboard. In second place was Rostered Off with Richard and Shaun aboard and in third place was Offshore Account with Dave Arthur and Keith aboard.

Short Course
In first second and third place was Blonde with John and Ray aboard.

Just a quick note and call to bring out your boats. It only takes 2 to make a race. It would be nice if more suitable boats took up the short course option.

The end Trev

Jervis Bay Sailing Club “Around The Bay Race”

Its always exciting for me to sail in a different location with other sailors. And the Jervis Bay race is one we look forward too. Conditions were looking good on race morning with the sun shining and the wind coming in from the South West at about 15 knots. Typical for Jervis Bay, it was a little lumpy, and that is not counting the whales on the surface of the bay we spotted. Trailer yacht numbers were down from previous years with eleven starters in division 3. Port Kembla yachts were well represented with Rosstered Off, Nirvana 7, Out of Exile and Frou Frou lining up for the start.

Things were looking good at the Creswell mark with the TY’s rounding fairly close together before bearing away for the quick run to the Honeymoon Bay mark. However shortly thereafter for Frou Frou, her not so good Jervis Bay race history continued when half way across the rudder fittings pulled out of the stern. All hands were on deck to drop and secure the sails and start the motor for the bumpy ride back to the launching ramp. We had plenty of time on the slow trip back to eat lunch and watch the other boats disappearing in the distance. Nirvana 7 also had an equipment failure with her spinnaker pole breaking on the same leg which must have slowed them down for the remainder of the race down wind legs.

General reports of the race from Port Kembla sailor’s perspective were of a reasonably challenging, mostly bumpy, sometimes wet but enjoyable event. There was even reference from an unnamed source who stated that Lake Illawarra was a much nicer place to sail. I would like to mention though that the race was very well run and we were all made very welcome by the Jervis Bay Sailing Club members.

Any way to the results:

End Note:
Thank you to all the Port Kembla, Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin Sailing Club friends who commiserated with Frou Frou and crew about the did not finish and damage sustained to the boat. Thanks also for the offers of assistance. Particular thanks to my crew Peter, Alan and Ian who sprang into action in a seaman like manner to safely recover from Frou Frou’s no more steering issue, and tidy up at the end of the race. The support we receive made an otherwise unpleasant end to the day that little bit brighter.

TY Delegates Report 3 November 2012
It was not the most encouraging looking outdoors day when I left home for the sailing club on Saturday morning. With a light rain falling and dark clouds all around conditions didn’t look to promising. However by the time I arrived at the club there were signs that the weather was clearing and we might event end up with a nice afternoon for sailing. All the juniors were out in it so if they were doing it why shouldn’t we I thought.

I must digress a moment here and express my admiration for the junior sailing coaches, Rebecca, Hugh, Brad, Haydon, Todd and all the helping parents (please forgive me if I have forgotten someone). Without their enthusiasm and energy we would not have such a successful program for new young sailors.

When I arrived at the club just after 11 there were already 4 TY’s lined up ready to rig up. What I didn’t know is that only 2 were to brave the afternoon race, the others were preparing for today’s IYC night race. Offshore Account and Rosstered Off were the only 2 intrepid starters in today’s Championship 3 race. To skippers Dave and Jim and their crews, I hope we can improve the numbers of race starters for the remainder of the season to offer some additional competition.

I don’t have any accounts of the afternoons race so can only offer you eager readers the results.

Results for Championship Race 3
First place Rosstered Off and second place Offshore Account.

IYC night race:
The following are words from Jim Curry about the night race hosted by Illawarra Yacht Club.

“Very frustrating night. I felt like a V8 race safety car. Stopped at every buoy and waited for all to catch up. Then breeze would come in again from different direction such that we all carried spinnakers on every leg of the course.”

On behalf of the PKYC competitors I would like to convey our appreciation to Bob Bower for taking the time and energy to organise the night race. Thanks Bob.

Results for the IYC Night Race
First on CBH was I Spy with Brad Curry and crew, second H2O Born (IYC), third Offshore Account with Dave and crew, fourth Nirvana 7 with Keith and crew, Fifth The Vibe with Andrew and crew, sixth Rosstered Off with Jim and crew, seventh Bosun (IYC), eight Oboe (IYC) and ninth Bachelors Wife (IYC).

Upcoming events
There are three main events on our TY calendar before the end of the year. The Jervis Bay Regatta this coming weekend 10-11 November where quit a few of us have indicated we will be attending, the Kembla Klasic Regatta 24-25 November, where the TYs will be needed to help with running the event, and, the City of Canberra Regatta 1-2 December.
