TY Delegates Report 23 November 2013, Pointscore 10

TY Delegates Report 23 November 2013, Pointscore 10
Although the weather forecast was for possible light showers and moderate east south easterly winds, the black clouds encroaching from the north threatened to put a damper on today’s race. We found out later that the clouds were dumping heavy rain on Sydney and our MJ kids sailing this weekend’s round of the State Titles at Manly. No doubt they handled it OK.
As for us old blokes (mostly blokes today) the conditions, although a little overcast, accurately reflected the forecasted predictions of winds below 10 knots and shifting from south east to north east and back during the afternoon. Today we had one of our biggest fleet numbers for the season to date, with a sizable roll up of cats and dinghies, plus 4 TYs entering the race. Today we also welcomed back Nirvana 7 for the first time this season with Keith, Rudy and a new crew member, Andrew, a parent of one of our junior sailors sailing in the afternoon’s race. On the starting line we also had The Blonde with John and Ray aboard, Grey Fox with Digger and Leo aboard and Frou Frou with Peter, Alan and me aboard.
The wind shifted more to the south at the beginning of the race favouring the leeward end start and port tack. Frou Frou and The Blonde took advantage of the shift and made some important gains up the first work. Frou Frou rounded the top mark first ahead of Nirvana 7, Grey Fox and The Blonde.
Conditions remained shifty and light for the rest of the race providing lots of opportunities to make big gains on the works, reaches and runs if you happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Seeing the dark clouds closing in and becoming more menacing and the wind fading, our experienced duty crew for today, Rob and Dave, made a good call to shorten the course so we all had an opportunity to finish and get home before inclement conditions made it unpleasant and possibly dangerous. It’s always a difficult call for a duty crew, who must keep an eye on competitors in a mixed fleet with significant speed crew competency differences, to make decisions about shortening a course or to let a race continue. Where there are concerns about changing weather conditions we should always expect that the duty crew make a decision that puts the safety of the fleet as their priority. Those aboard Frou Frou were pleased to get ashore and packed away in case the bad weather hit.
Final results, Pointscore 10
Places Boat Name Corrected time PBH (minutes)
First Frou Frou 71.66
Second Nirvana 75.54
Third The Blond 75.99
Fourth Grey Fox 81.91

TY Delegates Report 16 November 2013, Pointscore 9
Wet and somewhat wild would be a good description of conditions for today’s race. Three TY’s, “The Blonde” with John and Ray aboard, “Grey Fox” with Digger and Leo aboard and “Frou Frou” with Ian Peter and me aboard were keen enough to head out.
Conditions were also challenging for Richard and Shaun aboard the duty boat. With the wind shifted around from south the east to south and back to east during the many rain squalls prior to the start (and continuing after the start) It must have made setting the good course they eventually did very difficult.
From my viewpoint it was one of those in between wind strength days. Not quite heavy enough for the number 3 headsail but not light enough for the number 2, with the rain squalls added more variability to wind direction and strength as they came through.
Grey Fox was on fire today. We (Frou Frou that is) could not make any distance on them especially up wind, or, even downwind under spinnaker. We did shake them off on the final triangle only to find out that Digger and Leo had dropped sails to render assistance to one of the catamaran sailors in difficulty righting and reboarding their capsized craft. Times have been duly adjusted to compensate Grey Fox for her important and justifiable rescue activity.
The conditions sounded like they were to The Blondes liking. While we were struggling at times around the course The Blonde was making her unfussed and under control passage to finishing first over the line by about 4 minutes.
Pointscore 9, Final Results
First on corrected time: Grey Fox
Second on corrected time: The Blonde (adjusted for completion of short course)
Third on corrected time: Frou Frou

TY delegates report for 9 November 2013

TY delegates report for 9 November 2013
Saturday’s race was both an anticlimax (because the race was cancelled) and exciting for the same reasons the race was cancelled.

The first bit of excitement happened when the duty boats steering broke while the duty crew of Dave Morison and Rob Lawler were in the process of assisting a vessel in distress, and ended up requiring assistance themselves. They were eventually towed to safety by Todd and Brad Curry aboard Puffer.

The second bit of excitement happened when the Southerly change hit with force, just before our starting time. Not that there was going to be a race without the duty boat available. The wind changed from a gusty westerly to a blustery full on Southerly in minutes that included a dramatic drop in temperature. At the time Frou Frou was sailing back and forth trying to figure out what had happened to the duty boat and why the rest of the fleet bar the other 2 TYs, Rostered Off and Grey Fox, were still on the beach. During all this excitement Rosstered Off and Grey Fox were safely tucked up behind Gooseberry Island blissfully unaware of the unfolding drama.

The Southerly Buster made for getting back to the safety of the launching ramp and on the trailer very challenging. A big thank you to Rebecca, Nichole and Kylie for lending their experience and assistance helping us TY’s tie up to the wharf and safely back on our trailers.

TY Delegates Report 2 November 2013 Jervis Bay Challenge
Travelling away to distant destinations is one of the elements I find attractive about owing and sailing a trailer yacht. However if the place you are travelling to is not how you imagined or you don’t properly prepare or the weather is unpleasant the reality can often be different to this imagined yachting paradise.
The last few times Frou Frou sailed in this event , strong winds, big waves and, boat failure last year aligned more to the latter reality and did not align with the imagined sailing in fair winds on Jervis Bay’s sparkling clear water with dolphins surfing the bow wave and whales leaping out of the water in the distance.
Jervis Bay surprised us this year with the conditions more in keeping with the brochure. Although the dolphins only appeared for us during the last quarter of the race and there was an absence of leaping whales.
I did see Kevin Middleton from the Yacht Shop for the second sailing week in a row. Last time was him steering a 16 on Lake Illawarra and this time he was aboard one of the keel yacht on JB. For all you who are concerned for my welfare, I have successfully recovered from the shock.
TY Numbers were down from previous JB Challenge years with only about 10 starters. Port Kembla Sailing Club provided 2 starters, the Porters aboard Out of Exile and, Alan, Ian, Andrew and me aboard Frou Frou.
Race conditions favoured boats like Frou Frou that do better in light to moderate winds and run well square down wind. These conditions permitted Frou Frou to perform close to her handicap and keep up well with the fleet of sports and keel yachts. It also helped having 4 on the rail when the wind got heavier near the end.
All in all a very nice day on the beautiful waters of Jervis Bay and one that, this time at least, measured up to the brochure and our expectations. Thanks must go to JB Yacht Club for their hospitality and to Steve Lymbery and helpers for managing it so well again.
I don’t have any TY report for the PKSC event. For those that competed I hope you had a good day on home waters.
Just a reminder that this coming Saturdays TY event is the postponed Championship number 3. Look forward to seeing you at the club on Saturday.
The end Trev.
