TY Delegates Report 10 November 2012

Jervis Bay Sailing Club “Around The Bay Race”

Its always exciting for me to sail in a different location with other sailors. And the Jervis Bay race is one we look forward too. Conditions were looking good on race morning with the sun shining and the wind coming in from the South West at about 15 knots. Typical for Jervis Bay, it was a little lumpy, and that is not counting the whales on the surface of the bay we spotted. Trailer yacht numbers were down from previous years with eleven starters in division 3. Port Kembla yachts were well represented with Rosstered Off, Nirvana 7, Out of Exile and Frou Frou lining up for the start.

Things were looking good at the Creswell mark with the TY’s rounding fairly close together before bearing away for the quick run to the Honeymoon Bay mark. However shortly thereafter for Frou Frou, her not so good Jervis Bay race history continued when half way across the rudder fittings pulled out of the stern. All hands were on deck to drop and secure the sails and start the motor for the bumpy ride back to the launching ramp. We had plenty of time on the slow trip back to eat lunch and watch the other boats disappearing in the distance. Nirvana 7 also had an equipment failure with her spinnaker pole breaking on the same leg which must have slowed them down for the remainder of the race down wind legs.

General reports of the race from Port Kembla sailor’s perspective were of a reasonably challenging, mostly bumpy, sometimes wet but enjoyable event. There was even reference from an unnamed source who stated that Lake Illawarra was a much nicer place to sail. I would like to mention though that the race was very well run and we were all made very welcome by the Jervis Bay Sailing Club members.

Any way to the results:

End Note:
Thank you to all the Port Kembla, Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin Sailing Club friends who commiserated with Frou Frou and crew about the did not finish and damage sustained to the boat. Thanks also for the offers of assistance. Particular thanks to my crew Peter, Alan and Ian who sprang into action in a seaman like manner to safely recover from Frou Frou’s no more steering issue, and tidy up at the end of the race. The support we receive made an otherwise unpleasant end to the day that little bit brighter.

The End Trev.
