TY Delegates Report 14 April 2012

TY Delegates Report 14 April 2012
Once upon a time there were three old men who set out in a sailing boat. The weather was fine and the wind was gently wafting them along. They were in the company of other old men, some guided by younger people who were also sailing contentedly along in the pleasant conditions. Then, slowly but surely, the wind become stronger and started to come from different directions. This upset the balance of some of the old men who, up until this point, were chatting to each other about their children’s exploits and about retirement plans. A gust of wind caught a few of these old men unawares turning their vertical sailing orientation into a horizontal one (in the manner of keel suddenly falling off). At this point the chatty conversation ceased and was replaced by groaning and other audible communication strategies, some of which they would not have allowed their children to copy in a public setting. In due course equilibrium was restored and the conversation continued as before, that is until the next challenge to forward progress occurred. It all sounds a little like the story of life really. You think everything is going fine then, all of a sudden, it can turn to #@$%, and just as quickly return to what might be considered normal.

How about the impressive roll up of boats for the final championship race of the season? The day attracted five starters and one crew doing an experimental sail to see if their boat was competitive, and it certainly was.

Welcome back to Rob Lawler and family aboard Hardware for the second time this season. They certainly sailed Hardware impressively in the light and variable condition - making it look easy. I don’t quite know why but, to me at least, it brings a feeling of joy to see the return of successful skippers like Rob Lawler, ably supported by a crew of family members, Suzy, Meg and Jarrod, sailing extremely well and enjoying their time together on the water.

The same can be said of new campaigners like Richard and Astrid. We have all reaped the benefits of competitive club sailing and know that a supportive environment like Port Kembla Sailing Club is the quickest and safest way to improve your boat handling skills and enjoyment of sailing. So we welcome new and returning members and would like to encourage their regular participation in club races.

It takes a while to get the feel for a boat, and at least on this season’s performance, Digger and Danny are starting to get the best out of Grey Fox. On corrected time there are only a couple of minutes between first and last.

Championship 8 Results:
For the long course, first on corrected time was Nirvana 7 sailed by Rebecca, Keith and Rudy, second was Frou Frou sailed by Alan, Peter and Trevor, and third was Grey Fox sailed by Digger and Danny.

Short course first on corrected time was Hardware sailed by Rob, Suzzy, Meg and Jarrod, and second was Magella sailed by Richard and Astrid.

Pointscore 24 Results:
For the long course, first on handicap was Grey Fox, second Nirvana and third Frou Frou.
For the short course, first on handicap was Hardware and second was M

Ross 780 States 14 – 15 April (Report from our roving reporter Jim Curry)
The Ross 780 States held last weekend on Jervis Bay attracted four entrants, one from Bathurst, one from Newcastle, one from St Georges Basin, and of course Rosstered Off from PKSC. Four short races were sailed on Saturday with the scheduled races on Sunday cancelled due to a lack of wind. Saturday’s short courses resulted in very close racing with seconds separating first and last at the finish of each race. It sounded like a good event so lets hope it can build and be better patronised in years to come, unless we all move to Queensland where all the others seem to live

Coming event:

Race 4 TY Travellers Series 28 April 2012
On 28 April Race 4, the final race of the TY Travellers series will be held. The race organised by Wollongong Yacht club will start at Port Kembla Harbour, sail around the Five Islands and finish in Wollongong Harbour, Belmore Basin. This sounds like a very exciting event. Boats will be travelling from Lake Macquarie and Sussex inlet to compete and given how well PKSC TY’s are doing so far, I hope that as many as possible will continue supporting the TY Travellers Series and sail in this event. Entries can be made on line at the Wollongong Yacht Club website athttp://www.wyc.yachting.org.au/?Page=58472

See you all next Saturday for the final Pointscore race of the season.

The End Trev
