However interesting the other starters in today’s fleet were my job article is to write about the Trailer Yachts. That is not to say the TYs were uninteresting, on the contrary. What they lacked in numbers they made up for in enthusiasm, with the three TY starters making the best of the light north easterly breeze, perfecting their tacks and jibs on each leg of the course.
For me and my fellow duty crew Alan and Richard one of the observations we were able to make was how much could be gained in these light conditions from a good quick tack or spinnaker set and jibe. Or conversely, if not performed so well, how much could be lost doing the same manoeuvrer (mental note next time doing the same thing aboard Frou Frou). And incidentally, during the 2 ½ hours Alan, Richard and I were on board the “Wal Curry think tank” we solved most of the major economic and social issues confronting the planet. Amazing what you can do if you put a few heads together. Maybe that is how we could attract more duty crews by advertising that the most difficult problem confronting you at that moment could be solved merely by being aboard the duty boat. All jokes aside, for me and probably for many of you reading this as well, this isn’t far from the truth. Being on the water watch the magic of sailing, observing how beautifully boats can glide through the waves, and how spectacular the Illawarra escarpment looks from this angle, helps you focus your thoughts on what is really important.
Anyway down to the business of who won todays heat 6 of the 2011 -2012 Pointscore Series. With less than 3 minutes on corrected time between finishers and in first place was Out of Exile with Bob, Rob, Jef, Johny and Laurie (forgive me if I have interpreted you name form the sign on sheet incorrectly) , followed very closely in second place by Rosstered Off with Jim, Richard, Wayne and Shaun aboard in second place and just behind in third place was Grey Fox with Digger and Danny aboard.
I have been advised that historically handicaps were calculated after assessing the first 4 race finishes of new boat in the fleet. It seems to be a fair and reasonable way to proceed, but please let me know if you have any objections to continuing this method.
I hope you all can make the effort to sail in next weeks Pointscore 7. See you then.
