Thanks to Sam and Kevin our duty crew today. They set a good and fare course in difficult shifty wind conditions. We all appreciated their efforts on the day.
Speaking of shifty wind, the five to 8 knot southerly/south easterly/easterly (not necessarily in that order) was good to some of the TY fleet but not so good to others. I believe there was an element of luck in being on the right side of the course when the wind decided to do its shifty thing. Froufrou and Rosstered Off appeared to benefit and Momentum and Ruby were not so lucky with the shifts. Still, you have to admit it was a good day to be on the water.
In my opinion it was a particularly good day to introduce new crew to Port Kembla Sailing Club. On that note and on behalf of us TY sailors I extend a big welcome and thanks to Froufrou’s crew for today Gemma and Mark. Not only are they intelligent and capable, but they lowered the average age of the sailors on board by 20 years. I was also lucky to have Derrek Shepard aboard. It was great having the eyes of an accomplished and consistently good sailor, to pick up on things you can tweak that make it easier to sail faster. Much appreciated Derrek.
One of my personality flaws is that, in general, I find people irritating. For example they can want stuff from you at a time that isn’t convenient, ask you questions you don’t feel like answering and get in your way at supermarket shelves. Contradicting this generalisation is that I also find people endlessly fascinating. They most often have interesting lives and interesting stories, and in many ways can enhance your sailing experiences and your life. Today I am glad that I put my flaw (even though its often accurate) of finding people in general irritating and invite people that I did not know aboard Froufrou. They were interesting, intelligent and enhanced my life. Needless to say I hope that all you TY skippers take the risk and invite new people aboard to crew, especially if they are young, intelligent and agile. It will expand our pool of sailors and, like me, you may also be happily surprised.
Only a few more sailing days to go before the end of the year. Hopefully you are able to make them.
