Saturday’s race was both an anticlimax (because the race was cancelled) and exciting for the same reasons the race was cancelled.
The first bit of excitement happened when the duty boats steering broke while the duty crew of Dave Morison and Rob Lawler were in the process of assisting a vessel in distress, and ended up requiring assistance themselves. They were eventually towed to safety by Todd and Brad Curry aboard Puffer.
The second bit of excitement happened when the Southerly change hit with force, just before our starting time. Not that there was going to be a race without the duty boat available. The wind changed from a gusty westerly to a blustery full on Southerly in minutes that included a dramatic drop in temperature. At the time Frou Frou was sailing back and forth trying to figure out what had happened to the duty boat and why the rest of the fleet bar the other 2 TYs, Rostered Off and Grey Fox, were still on the beach. During all this excitement Rosstered Off and Grey Fox were safely tucked up behind Gooseberry Island blissfully unaware of the unfolding drama.
The Southerly Buster made for getting back to the safety of the launching ramp and on the trailer very challenging. A big thank you to Rebecca, Nichole and Kylie for lending their experience and assistance helping us TY’s tie up to the wharf and safely back on our trailers.
The end Trev.
